Spinal decompression therapy is a non-surgical intervention used to treat a variety of spinal conditions, injuries, and/or alignment issues. During spinal decompression, the spine is stretched and relaxed in intervals throughout the session in order to create negative intradiscal pressure. Doing this will help to pull herniated or bulging disc material back into the disc. This therapy also serves to promote the passage of nutrients that can heal the affected area.

As a result of spinal decompression therapy, the chiropractor is able to relieve pressure off of the discs in the spine, which in turn will relieve pain. The discs in the spine act as cushions and when a patient is experiencing issues such as bulging or herniated discs, the intermittent stretching and relaxation techniques used can greatly reduce pain and discomfort.

During a spinal decompression session, the chiropractor will have the patient lay down on a special table and the patient is then connected to a harness. This harness is designed to ensure that the patient is in the correct position for the therapy. The chiropractor manipulates the table in such a way that the patient's spine is gently stretched.

The most common reasons that a patient would seek this type of therapy are due to a bulging disc, herniated disc, pinched nerve, or ongoing back pain. It is also a beneficial therapy for people who have been diagnosed with sciatica or who have had damage or injury to their spinal nerve roots.

It is important to make sure that you go to a chiropractor who has experience with providing spinal decompression therapy. There are some patients who would not be good candidates for this particular therapy. Spinal decompression therapy is not recommended for people who are obese, those who have osteoporosis, cardiovascular disease, and it is not recommended for pregnant women. Also, any person who has had spinal surgery and has screws, metal plates or other hardware should not receive this treatment.

Because our spine is a vital part of our bodies, controlling how we move, providing stability in our core, and helping us to maintain an upright position, taking care of our spine is essential. When our spine is misaligned or compressed, we can experience a great deal of pain, not only in our backs but in other parts of our body, such as our arms and legs, it is important to seek the help of a medical professional to be sure you receive the appropriate care. Spinal decompression therapy can be extremely beneficial to those who are good candidates for the treatment. Reducing pressure in our spines can greatly reduce our pain and promote healing for the long term.
