Don’t Be a Casualty of These Preventable AC Issues!

Summer may be winding down, but that doesn’t mean the warm weather is gone for good. There’s still plenty of time before homeowners can shut off their air conditioners and switch over to heating mode. And with the AC working hard these last few months, late summer is when many homeowners experience problems with their AC units

Fortunately, with a little knowledge and diligence, one can avoid most of these problems. And after all, no one wants to have their air conditioner go on the fritz on one of the last warm and muggy days of the year. So read on to learn how to avoid three of the most common air conditioner issues homeowners face.

Weak Airflow/No Airflow

The first AC issue to watch out for is poor airflow - when the air coming out of the supply vents feels weak, can’t be felt at all, or when the home’s air generally feels stuffy and stagnant. This can be caused by several things, including:

  • A dirty air filter
  • Blocked return vents
  • Dirty or frozen evaporator coils
  • Leaky, dirty, or crushed ductwork
  • A malfunctioning blower fan
  • A refrigerant leak

To prevent AC airflow issues, homeowners should first check to ensure none of the return vents are blocked by furniture or clutter. The next step is to change their air filters on time. This will help the blower circulate air more freely and help prevent dirt and debris from getting into the unit or ductwork. Finally, the ductwork should regularly be inspected by a professional, tested for leaks, and cleaned, if necessary.

Refrigerant Leak/Low Refrigerant Levelsrefrigerant

Next up is a lack of refrigerant, most often caused by a refrigerant leak. Refrigerant leaks can manifest in multiple ways, from poor airflow to decreased unit efficiency (the system runs constantly or fails to cool the home). Common causes of refrigerant leaks include corrosion of the copper refrigerant lines or coils, loose joints or connections, excessive vibration, and normal wear and tear.

The best way to prevent refrigerant leaks is to have the system professionally inspected and serviced one to two times per year - once at the start of spring and again before the fall. A pro can replace worn or aging parts that may contribute to a leak, tighten connections, mitigate wear and tear, test for leaks, and check the system’s refrigerant levels and recharge the system if need be.

Unit Won’t Power Onhvac

The third AC issue homeowners often experience is a system that won’t turn on. Multiple issues could cause this.
  • The thermostat may need replacing (or simply need replacement batteries)
  • The unit’s emergency power shutoff (usually located near the outdoor condenser unit) may be turned off
  • The evaporator coils may be frozen over with ice, preventing the unit from kicking on
  • The unit may be overheating, short-circuiting, or overloading the circuit, causing the breaker to trip

Depending on the underlying issue, preventing this could be as simple as keeping the thermostat’s batteries up to date, installing a new thermostat, or making sure the air filters get changed on time. But since the issue is often more complicated or more serious - such as a loose or damaged wire in the unit, failing compressor, or faulty electrical component - preventing AC power issues usually comes down to regular professional maintenance.
