You finally have the deck of your dreams!  It looks amazing and you’re loving all the compliments from family, friends, and neighbors.  Once you’re done basking in the glory of your new outdoor living area, it’s time to start doing the necessary maintenance that will keep it looking spectacular.

Performing Proper Kansas City Deck Care is Essential.

Nature is going to throw everything it has at your new deck.  Help it stay in pristine condition by performing the following tasks.

A broom is your deck’s best friend.  Leaves, dirt, and pollen do an excellent job of collecting water when they’re allowed to build up.  The constant moisture causes wood to rot and contributes to the growth of algae and mold, which results in decks becoming slip and fall hazards.  Sweeping away debris before it has the chance to accummulate is the simplest way to extend the life of your deck and help it retain its original beauty.

When winter is in full swing, be sure to sweep the snow off your deck to prevent dangerous and damaging ice from building up.

Give it a good scrubbing.  Twice a year, deep clean the decking boards with a stiff bristled brush.  There are several types of cleaning solvent available, or make your own by combining one cup of white vinegar with one gallon of warm water, and sprinkle baking soda on the deck’s problem areas prior to scrubbing.  Once you’ve finished cleaning the whole deck, wait fifteen to twenty minutes, then use a pressure washer on the lowest setting to rinse the cleaning solution from the decking boards.

This type of maintenance must be performed when spring arrives, then again before winter sets in, and immediately before staining or painting your deck.

Apply a coat of armor.  Preserve and strengthen your deck with a clear coating or stain.  In addition to enhancing the natural beauty of the wood grain, it’s the best way to prevent the absorption of harmful moisture and defend against the sun’s harsh UV rays.

You can also protect your new deck by painting it.  This is also a great way to liven up your outdoor living area by matching your home’s trim or flaunting your favorite color!

When landscaping, leave a wide berth.  Shrubs should be at least a foot away from your outdoor living area.  Before planting, consider how large they’ll be once they’re fully grown.  Keeping your landscaping at a distance from the edges of your outdoor retreat makes Kansas City deck care a breeze because all sections of your deck are easily accessible.

If you currently have shrubs and other plants located close to the deck, be sure to keep them trimmed to avoid attracting insects that may find the wooden decking boards irresistible.  Furthermore, when the leaves from plants are allowed to be in constant contact with the deck, moisture will be a problem in these areas because shading promotes the growth of algae, mold, and mildew.
