Stop Struggling With These Common AC Issues

Just because Autumn is around the corner doesn’t mean the air conditioner stops working. Unfortunately, hot weather sticks around a lot longer these days, and by this point in the year, many AC units start experiencing an array of problems. The good news is, homeowners can prevent several common AC problems with some attention from the average homeowner. Read on to find out how!

Issue # 1 - Poor/ No Airflow

Without good airflow, a home’s AC unit won’t cool the house down. When it comes to poor airflow, there are a couple of causes that homeowners might need to address. They include:

  • Frozen Coils: The evaporator coils of an AC unit cool air that then gets cycled through the home. But, when coils freeze over, the ice prevents air from flowing correctly through the unit. The fix? If the thermostat fan is set to “Auto,” switch it to “On” to help encourage airflow to allow the coils to thaw. If the problem persists, have an expert inspect the unit.
  • Broken Blower: If the blower fan of the AC unit breaks down, air won’t blow from the unit. The fix? Replace the blower, and then make sure to schedule annual AC maintenance to keep the blower clean and lubricated to prevent future breakdowns.
  • Clogged Filters: A clogged air filter will stop air from flowing through the ductwork, resulting in a hot house. Change filters every three months, or more often for thinner filters, to prevent this from happening.

Issue # 2 - Refrigerant Leaksrefrigerant

Without refrigerant, an AC unit is pretty much useless. Refrigerant is the chemical that cools hot air inside the unit before it flows through the house. A refrigerant leak generally causes temperature fluctuations in the home, higher energy bills, and humidity in the house.

Cracked or Damaged Refrigerant Lines

Usually, a cracked refrigerant line causes the leak. The fix? Replacing any cracked lines, followed by maintaining annual maintenance to keep all AC parts in working order.

Issue # 3 - Unit Power Problems hvac

There’s nothing worse than an AC system that refuses to turn on. It can leave homeowners frustrated and stuck with a hot house. But, homeowners can usually troubleshoot a couple of common causes before calling an expert.
  • Blown Fuse: AC machines use a lot of power. Sometimes, they can blow a fuse and overload a circuit when additional electrical appliances run on the same circuit. Check the circuit breaker for any tripped circuits and attempt resetting them. If the AC still doesn’t turn on, there may be another reason for it.
  • Thermostat: If the AC doesn’t turn on, the thermostat might be to blame. In some cases, the thermostat settings have been accidentally changed. Or, in other cases, the thermostat itself may require batteries or replacement. If the thermostat isn’t functioning after replacing the batteries, call an expert for help.
  • Damaged Wiring: In some cases, an AC may not turn on if the wiring has eroded or experienced damage. For example, a stray rodent chewing on the wire, aging wiring, or weather can damage wiring. The fix? Have an HVAC technician repair the wiring.
