Not all grass seed is the same. Each type of seed has its own unique properties and benefits and knowing the strengths and weaknesses of each seed type can help you decide what variety is best for your yard. Whether you are looking to renovate a small area, overseed or establish a new lawn, it’s extremely important to choose the right grass species. This can be done by considering your region and climate, lawn usage and appearance of your lawn.

Consider Your Locality and Climate

The Ohio climate is what's known as a "cool climate" and is one that experiences warm summers and cold winters. For this reason, it is important to choose a seed that is specifically designed for cooler climates. Cool season seed types do require more water when the temperatures skyrocket in the summer but are more shade friendly. Warm season grasses generally have deeper root systems and require a great deal of sunlight. They will dormant during the winter months. While this may sound appealing for seeding purposes, these seed types may leave ugly patches after cold seasons and require reseeding and extensive maintenance to keep your lawn looking great. Because of this, it is suggested that many of these seed types be avoided in Ohio.

Planned Use For Your Lawn

Once the region and climate have been determined, next you'll need to consider how and to what degree your lawn will be used. Ask yourself, what do I want out of my lawn? Do you want a lawn that looks lush and beautiful? Then consider a quick growing seed like perennial rye, but be aware that fast germinating seed is often sensitive to heavy lawn use such as kids playing or sports fields, and may not be as strong over the long term.

Prefer something more drought resistant? An excellent choice for drought resistance is fescue grass. Fescue also tends to need less light, making it an excellent choice for shady areas. If you’re looking for something that has that classic lawn look and is durable enough for foot traffic - Kentucky bluegrass is a great choice.

Depending on your lawn’s needs, many companies can suggest custom blends to give you the perfect blend of shade, drought and wear tolerance and couple that with your establishment needs to create an aesthetically pleasing, yet resilient lawn.

When to Seed?

The final step in seeding and grass growth is knowing when to seed your lawn. If you are planning on repairing bare spots or seeding a new lawn, you’ll want to do that in the spring, because the first few months of the growing season are generally wetter, giving your new grass the chance to build its roots before the summer heat arrives.

If you’re planning to overseed your lawn, the fall is a perfect time. When you overseed, you essentially fill in what has become worn due to use in the summer. This process isn’t designed for extensive bare spots, but rather basic thinning.
