In Honor of National AC Day, Here Are Three Ways to Care for Your Home’s Central AC System!

There’s no better month than July for National AC Day. July 17th is doubly relevant because it’s the day that Willis Carrier filed the plans for the modern air conditioner, and it’s the month when ACs are in full swing. One thing is sure: air conditioners have come a long way in terms of efficiency and size since Carrier’s day. But, one thing that hasn’t changed is how hot the summer months are. And since ACs get the most use in the summer, it’s no wonder that summer is also when most AC units break down.

Luckily, below are three tips to help homeowners keep their air conditioners running longer and cooling better.

Clean House, Clean Filters

Central cooling systems work by pulling air from the home into the return ducts to remove heat and moisture from that air. This is why it’s important to change the air filters on time; the AC pulls the air through the filter to help keep the condenser coil clean. Because if the condenser coil gets dirty, efficiency takes a nosedive.

But, since the air comes from inside the house, changing the filter on time isn’t the only thing homeowners can do to keep their air conditioner happy. Cleaning the house regularly can also be a big help! A clean house means that there’s not as much debris and dirt getting pulled into the filter. This helps the filters last a little longer and also keeps the AC unit running efficiently for longer.

Small Temperature Adjustments Help Reduce Strain on the Unit

The next tip in honor of National AC Day is all about small adjustments. During the hot summer months, small adjustments can go a long way to reducing strain on the AC unit. For instance, a home with a thermostat usually set to 70-degrees during the day can benefit from raising that temperature just a couple of degrees. Setting the thermostat to 73-degrees during the day reduces stress on the AC by keeping it from running all the time.

And, when night comes around, it’s okay to bring the temperature back down around the 70-degree mark again. Since it’s not as hot outside during the nighttime hours, the air conditioner won’t have to work as hard to hit the lower temperature. This can make for a longer-lasting AC unit.

The Power of Tune-Ups and Regular Maintenance

Last on the list of tips is probably the most important: maintenance and tune-ups. The tips above are great for homeowners who want to help their system last longer (and save money on energy bills in the process), but there comes a time when the homeowner can’t do anymore. A professional must take over. This is when a regular maintenance plan comes in handy.

When homeowners have a professional HVAC tech come to their home to do maintenance and inspections, they take the guesswork out of AC care. The tech knows what to look for, what to clean, and how to avoid expensive problems. This is why a maintenance plan is a must for any homeowner looking to get the most out of their air conditioner!
