Weird but True Facts about Air Conditioning

While most people will take advantage of air conditioning on a hot summer day, there are many things about the history of air conditioners. So to answer the title question. Both American Independence Day and National Air Conditioning Day are in July. Both are things that bring people together. Both are a great reason to celebrate life here. Here are some strange but true facts about one of the wonders of modern invention: the air conditioner.

Celebrate National Air Conditioning Day on July 17

How many people know that there is a national holiday to honor AC? Well, it is coming up fast and there are a few things a homeowner can do to celebrate this practically indispensable appliance. A few ideas may include:

  • Tune-ups: Make sure the unit has proper maintenance, so it can function at its best.
  • Filter cleaning or replacement: This is a help to both the air quality in the home and the functioning of the air conditioner.
  • Turning up the thermostat: The smaller the difference between the indoor and outdoor temperatures, the less strain there is on an air conditioning system. This means turning it up a bit during daylight hours.

AC was Invented in New York, USA

If a person has ever had a stack of paper out in humid, hot weather, they know how the edges begin to wrinkle and the paper becomes limp and weak, tearing easily and wrinkling. Willis Carrier was a young man who worked at Sackett-Wilhelms Lithographing and Publishing Company and knew the issues that stem from the heat and humidity when working with paper.

In 1902, he worked to create a machine that blew air over tubes full of cold water in order to dehumidify the publishing house. He soon saw that this machine had much more wide-ranging application than simply humidifying or dehumidifying the air. The workers were more comfortable and other industries soon saw the value of Carrier’s “Apparatus for Treating Air.”

Air Conditioning and Summer Movie Madness

Soon many public buildings and businesses were air-conditioned. Movie theaters had a great boom in the 1930s not only due to “talkies,” but due to the fact that they were air-conditioned. People enjoyed the “summer blockbuster” films, but also enjoyed a break from the summer heat.

The Rivoli Theatre in New York City was the first to see that a cooling system could improve their business during the summer. They had heard of Willis Carrier and approached him in 1925 to install a cooling unit for them. It was an amazing success. Word of the triumph spread and soon other theaters followed the example of the Rivoli.

By the 1960’s most households in the US had their own air conditioning unit. Today, more than 87% of United States households have air conditioning of some sort.
