Can You Reverse Periodontal Disease?

Rancho Cucamonga, United States - July 13, 2021 / California Dental Care & Orthodontics /

What Is Periodontal Disease?

Periodontal disease is the infection of the gum and surrounding tissue caused by the buildup of bacteria-harboring plaque. The first stage is inflammation and bleeding of the gums, referred to as gingivitis. If gingivitis isn’t treated in time, the bacteria start to migrate below the gum line, leading to a deeper infection.

As the disease progresses, bacteria damage the support between the gum and teeth, and, as the bacteria continue downward, the gum, tooth roots, and bone are destroyed. Periodontal disease is a major cause of tooth loss and bone breakdown.

Is It Reversible?

Thankfully, the early stages of gum disease are reversible. Gingivitis is the most treatable stage; brushing and flossing twice a day and regular dental cleanings are usually effective in reversing gingivitis. If you notice that your gums are swollen or bleed when you brush, keep up with hygiene and schedule an appointment with your dentist. If you let gingivitis progress, it becomes periodontal disease and is no longer treatable with at-home treatment options.

How Is Periodontal Disease Treated?

There are a few treatments that are used to address periodontal disease. Our dentist will perform periodontal scaling, which is a deep cleaning that removes plaque below the gum line. Root planing is then used to smooth the root, which encourages the gum to reattach to the tooth. You may also be given an antibacterial mouthwash after your deep cleanings. It’s critical to practice great oral hygiene while your periodontal disease is being treated. With good hygiene, you should be able to get your early-stage periodontitis under control!
