Need a Thermostat Upgrade? Check Out These Great Smart Thermostats!

Thermostat technology has come a long way since the days of the basic dial. Programmable thermostats were a game-changer since they allowed homeowners to automate their home’s comfort level to some degree. But nowadays, “smart” thermostats are taking over the scene. Smart thermostats allow homeowners to maximize efficiency, save energy, and control their home’s temperature remotely from their phone or tablet.

And the benefits don’t end there. Many newer models are loaded with enhanced features like voice control, energy usage analytics, and automatic energy-saving adjustments. But with so many models to choose from, it can be hard to select the right one. To help narrow things down, here’s a look at 3 of the top smart thermostats on the market today.

Honeywell Home T5+ Smart Thermostatthermostat

The T5+ from Honeywell is a great no-frills smart thermostat that’s inexpensive and easy to use. It doesn’t have many fancy extra features like some of its competitors, but it’s also drastically less expensive. And despite its low price tag, the T5+ is a high-quality thermostat from one of the most trusted brands in the industry.

The T5+ can be controlled entirely from a smartphone or tablet on the intuitive Honeywell Home app, is compatible with Siri and Alexa smart home systems, and can even send push notifications for filter change reminders and extreme indoor temperature alerts. It also features GeoFencing, which utilizes smartphone location information to determine whether anyone is home or on their way home and heat or cool the house accordingly. The only real drawback with the T5+ is its lack of features.

EcoBee SmartThermostat with Voice Controlthermostat

The SmartThermostat with Voice Control from EcoBee is more than twice as expensive as the T5+ but is highly rated and packed with great features. Its Home & Away feature uses an occupancy sensor to turn the system off when no one’s home and kick it back on when someone returns. It also comes with an additional sensor placed in another room to ensure comfort throughout the house.

The SmartThermostat suggests changes to the programmed schedule based on usage patterns, provides monthly energy usage reports, and sends alerts for maintenance reminders and extreme temperature changes. It has Alexa built-in but is compatible with all of the leading smart home systems, and it can even make calls, send texts, and play music via voice command. Some users find the thermostat itself a little large, but that’s about the only complaint.

Google Nest Learning Thermostat

The Nest Learning Thermostat from Google is somewhere between the other two thermostats in terms of features but is only slightly less expensive than the EcoBee. It has a Home/Away feature to save energy when no one’s home and can be controlled remotely through the easy-to-use Nest app. It also has voice control capabilities if connected to an Alexa device.

One thing that sets this thermostat apart is that it “learns” the home’s usage patterns and makes adjustments automatically - though some users find that this feature leaves something to be desired. The Nest Learning Thermostat has other great energy conservation features, such as usage history reports and a leaf icon that lights up when an energy-saving temperature is selected. It also features maintenance reminders and alerts for extreme temperature shifts and abnormalities with the HVAC system.
