Are You Inviting Termites In? Discover How To Avoid Termite Infestation

Termites are silent destroyers. They slowly eat away at your house, leaving you with a deteriorating property that will be worthless in no time. If termites are not dealt with quickly and properly, they can even affect the structural integrity of a building and cause it to crumble down or collapse altogether.

If you start noticing termite droppings or mud tunnels on your floorboards or furniture, there is a good chance that these are signs of an impending termite invasion. Termite droppings often look like dark spots with grains in them, so if this looks familiar, don’t wait another minute before taking action.

Early detection and prevention are essential to minimizing property damage caused by termites. California’s leading pest control expert, McCauley Agricultural & Pest Service, is pleased to share four simple ways to prevent termites from making their way into your home.

  • Keep mulch away from your home’s foundation.

To keep termites away from your foundation, do not allow mulch or other organic material near it. This includes leaves, bark chips, and grass clippings. Pest experts recommend keeping mulch at least 15 inches away from your home’s foundation. Alternatively, you can use inorganic or synthetic mulches such as plastics, geotextiles, or rocks.

  • Clean your gutters regularly.

Prevent termite infestation by cleaning out gutters that could be clogged with leaves and other debris that would make an ideal nesting spot for termites. Gutters should be cleaned every six months or once per year depending on how quickly you notice an accumulation of dirt and debris in them. It only takes a few minutes to clean your gutters using household tools including rags, ladder, bucket, garden hose, or power washer if needed.

  • Keep wood, boxes, and old newspapers away from your home.

Termites are attracted to wood and other cellulose-based products such as cardboard boxes and old newspapers. To prevent termite infestations from occurring on your property, it is recommended to keep these materials away from the exterior walls of your home. Place the items at least 20 feet away from the nearest wall and store them at least five inches above the ground.

  • Eliminate sources of water.

Termites thrive in moist and dark places, which is why it’s important to eliminate any sources of water inside and outside of your home. Make sure that your home is free from leaky pipes and damaged gutters to prevent water from seeping through your home’s foundations and walls.
