What’s the Difference Between Urgent and Important Plumbing Issues?

It’s a virtual certainty that everyone will have to deal with a plumbing issue at some point in their life. Those lucky few will only need to deal with an issue that is merely a problem and not an emergency. But most other people will likely experience a plumbing emergency. But, half the battle of responding under a time of stress is knowing the difference between the two.

What constitutes an emergency? What does a problem entail? Read on to find out the answer to these questions and learn what’s urgent and what’s important when it comes to plumbing issues.

Broken Pipe = Urgent

broken pipe with water spewing outA broken pipe is no laughing matter. It’s not something to take lightly, either. But the problem is that not all broken pipes are the same. It’s easy to spot an emergency when a pipe has been completely broken and water is pouring out at an alarming rate. But there are many broken pipes that aren’t quite so visible. Sometimes, pinhole leaks will crop up in a pipe and start to leak slowly but steadily. When this happens, it can be easy to overlook.

Since most plumbing is located out of sight, it also tends to be out of mind. So when a pinhole leaks, it may be a little while before someone notices a wet spot on the wall or the ceiling. Even the smallest wet spot deserves some investigation to see what’s causing it. If it’s a leaking pipe, the best thing to do is shut off the water and call a plumbing professional to address the urgent issue.

Clogged Toilet = Important

Person holding a plunger over a toiletA clogged toilet is a great issue to illustrate an important issue instead of an urgent one. If the toilet clogs enough to overflow the toilet bowl, it can be a scary experience. No one wants to get their feet wet with gross toilet water. But, it’s easy to reach behind the toilet and shut off the water if this is the case.

With a plunger in hand, most people can fix a clogged toilet without the help of a plumber. Of course, this depends on the type of clog. Some clogs (like one caused by a toy or a ball flushed down the toilet) may need the help of a professional. But for the vast majority of toilet clogs, it’s something a homeowner can handle on their own.

Sewage System Backup = Urgent

Finally, we have the dreaded sewage system backup. There are a few different causes for this. Sometimes a tree root breaks into the drain pipes and causes a clog which then backs up waste in the house. This is considered an emergency, and a very urgent one. Some indications that there’s a sewage backup include gurgling sounds from the drains or toilets, multiple clogs all at once, and a bad smell coming up from the drains.

Those who think they are dealing with a sewage system backup should contact a plumbing company immediately to address the emergency. It’s important to stop using the plumbing until it’s fixed to avoid making the problem worse!
