Do Braces Hurt?

Barrington, United States - June 11, 2021 / Verbic Orthodontics /

So, you’ve decided to get braces to achieve the smile you want, but you don’t know what to expect. Or perhaps you’ve just had your braces put on, and you’re wondering if your experience is normal. Our specialist for Invisalign in Palatine, IL, wants to provide some information on what to expect with new braces or Invisalign.

Right After Your Appointment

When your braces are first put on, the adhesive for the brackets will need about 24 hours to set. Eat soft foods and check that the brackets are set properly. Make sure that you have all the tools you need, such as a water pick, floss, dental wax, or elastics, and schedule a follow-up appointment with our orthodontist. For Invisalign, you will feel slight discomfort, but all you need to do is get used to talking with your aligners, clean your aligners after eating or drinking and stick with your schedule.

Should Braces Hurt?

Since braces and Invisalign are putting excess pressure on your teeth, it is normal to feel some discomfort for the first few days. However, it should be temporary and resolve within five to seven days as you adjust to your braces. You may use pain medication, like ibuprofen, to help with the discomfort. If you’re experiencing extreme pain that persists for longer than a week, or you have exposed wires, contact our orthodontist to schedule an appointment.

Changing Your Habits

The most important thing to keep up on is frequent brushing and flossing. Ensure that all food and debris are removed from your braces to help you avoid decay and staining around the brackets. Additionally, avoid crunchy, sticky, or hard foods to prevent damaging your brackets. As Invisalign is removable, you do not have to worry about limiting the types of food you eat. Still, you must wash your aligners and brush your teeth before putting them in to prevent bacteria from becoming trapped.
