Finding the Best HVAC Filters To Keep Allergies at Bay

Allergy season is here, and the first line of defense is the home’s air filters. Allergens can run rampant in a house without air filters, causing sniffling, sneezing, sinus headaches, and a whole host of other allergy issues. Unfortunately, allergies are genetic, meaning if one or both of the parents in the house have allergies, then it’s likely the kids will develop them, too. So the right air filter can remove allergens and airborne particles such as pet dander, mold, pollen, and dust mites. So read on to find out how to pick the best air filter to effectively combat allergies.

Fiberglass Air Filters

filter

Fiberglass air filters are perhaps the most common kind of air filters used in homes across the country. They’re disposable filters that are generally meant to last thirty days, and they can be found in box stores for relatively low prices. They’re made of spun glass and are only designed to capture large airborne particles. This is why they generally have a MERV (minimum efficiency reporting values) rating of 1 to 4.

Fiberglass filters aren’t ideal for those with allergies primarily because of their low MERV ratings. The fact that they generally don’t last more than 30 days means that it’s easy to forget to replace them, which can affect the performance of the HVAC system. Those that have allergies should look for filters with higher MERV ratings and ones that last longer.

Reusable Filters

Next on the list is reusable filters. The opposite of disposable filters, these are generally made from polypropylene and are designed to be washed. But, reusable air filters have a wide range of MERV ratings. Many of the cheaper filters have a MERV rating of 1 to 4, but others are available that have a MERV rating up to 12.

These filters are ideal for those environmentally conscious homeowners who don’t like generating waste by using disposable air filters. Some reusable filters are designed to last up to 10 years before they need to be replaced. And these filters are cheaper in the long run than other disposable filters, although they do carry a higher up-front cost. For those with allergies, reusable filters with a high MERV rating are preferable to fiberglass filters.

HEPA Filters

filter By far, the best filters for those with allergies are HEPA filters. These High-Efficiency Particulate Air filters are designed to be able to filter out small particles. These filters are commonly used in air purifiers, but some can be used in HVAC systems, as well.

But before purchasing and installing one of these HEPA filters in the home, it’s best to consult an HVAC professional to make sure the filter will work. Since these filters are designed to filter out small particles, they can cause an HVAC system to work overtime to push air through the filter. These filters are the best for those with allergies but require the help of an HVAC tech to make sure the correct one is chosen for the home.
