3 Water Filtration Options for the Modern Home

Historically, people had to boil their water to kill bacteria and organisms before drinking it. It was time-consuming to sanitize water, but it was necessary to prevent waterborne diseases and illnesses from spreading through a city.

Nowadays, it’s not just bacteria that people have to worry about being in their water. There are over 316 contaminants and pollutants found in the typical water supply of a modern city. That’s 316 known pollutants that people are drinking and putting into their body every time they take a sip of water, eat food washed and prepared in that water, and that same water is used on the clothing they wear and bathe in.

While tap water may be considered relatively safe to drink, installing a filtration system for tap water makes it much safer for consumption and household use. Modern technology has created several options to achieve water filtration that can suit any home’s needs.

Option 1: Faucet-Mounted Filtersfaucet

Faucet-mounted filters are the most economical and usually the most straightforward water filtration system to install. Most homeowners can install the system themselves.

How Do Faucet-Mounted Filters Work?

Faucet-mounted fixtures work by drawing tap water directly from the tap and forces the water through a screen that filters out sand and silt from the water. Then, the water goes through a filter made of carbon or zeolite, the pores of which absorb impurities in the water. The cleaned water is then released from the spout for use.

What Are the Pros?

Faucet-mounted filters are initially reasonably inexpensive when compared to other filtration methods. They are also relatively user-friendly, with filter replacements easily found in stores.

What Are the Cons?

A minor but no less irritating inconvenience of faucet-mounted filters is the resulting flow-reduction of water. And, faucet-mounted filters only work to clean the water of the faucet it is attached to.

Faucet-mounted filters require frequent and regular filter replacement, with water supplies with hard water or more chemicals present requiring even more frequent replacement. These costs can add up. Additionally, not all faucet-mounted filters work on every model of sink faucet.

Option 2: Undersink Water Filterswater filter

Undersink water filters are an excellent, long-term investment for a home’s filtration system. These systems frequently require professional installation, but they tend to be more efficient than their faucet-mounted counterpart.

How Do Undersink Water Filters Work?

Like faucet-mounted filters, undersink filters use activated carbon filters to remove toxins, heavy metals, and chemicals from water. These units use water on demand, running it through a series of screens and filters until the water is clean and poured from the faucet for use.

What Are the Pros?

Undersink water filters work more efficiently than the faucet-mounted alternatives. They also tend to have heavier-duty filters that need replacing less often.

What Are the Cons?

While the filters need replacing less often, they do cost more than faucet-mounted alternatives. Additionally, these systems usually require professional installation and take up cabinet space.

Option 3: Whole-Home Water Filtration

While filtering drinking and cooking water is essential for clean, healthy water consumption, it is also majorly beneficial for the rest of the water usage. A whole-home water filtration system cleans the water from a sink and the water used in the washer, bathtub, and other plumbing systems.

How Do Whole-Home Water Filtration Systems Work?

Whole-home water filtration systems function using a combination of carbon-activated filters, reverse osmosis (which cleans water through a series of membranes,) and cation exchange (which uses positive ions to attract and remove negative ions from water) to clean water. They are considered the gold standard for keeping an entire home’s water clean.

What Are the Pros?

Whole-home water filtration cleans and filters every ounce of water that a home uses. They are known to reduce skin irritation, clean clothes better, and even reduce plumbing problems resulting from mineral build-up. As a bonus, their filters typically only need replacing once every couple of years.

What Are the Cons?

The main downside of a whole-home water filtration system is the cost. These systems require professional installation and frequently need modifications made to a home’s existing plumbing and water system before use. Additionally, while filters are only replaced every few years, they cost quite a bit more than those used in an undersink or faucet-mounted filter.
