Spring Cleaning for Outdoor Drains

When it comes to keeping drains clean, a lot of focus is given to indoor drains and sewer lines. While spring is the perfect time to schedule routine drain cleaning for indoor drains, it’s easy to forget about landscape drains and outdoor drains that do a tremendous amount of work during the spring rainy season. Heavy rainfall and snowmelt from the winter can carry debris and sediment into an outdoor drain.

Before spring is over, many homeowners find that their drains can no longer handle the seasonal rains. Instead of taking a risk, homeowners should take the time to have outdoor drains cleaned and protect them just like they would an indoor drain.

Signs of a Clogged Outdoor Drain

drain Clogged drains outdoors can often go unnoticed because they aren’t something that a family uses every day. Drains can slow down or even clog entirely, and the occupants of a home may not notice for a while. Keeping an eye out for these signs can help homeowners notice when their outdoor drains are clogged.
  • Wet spots on the lawn
  • Leaking gutters
  • Foundation damage
  • Overgrowth of grass and weeds in spots
  • No vegetation due to wet conditions
  • Basement leaks
  • Water backups

How Professionals Clear Drains

Cleaning drains outside is a very similar process to cleaning indoor drains. There are two methods that a plumber may choose:

  • Rooter: A rooter is a time-tested method for clearing drains. A rooter is a powerful auger with a blade that is fed into a drain. As it turns, it chews up the blockage and allows them to be flushed down the pipe.
  • Hydrojetting: Hydrojetting is a newer method but is proven to be even more effective in many cases than rooting. During hydrojetting, a powerful stream of water is forced into the pipe. It sprays forward and backward, so it washes stuck-on junk off the interior walls of the pipe. The water used to clean the pipes then helps wash away the debris as the hydrojetting process continues.

A plumber can determine which method will be more effective depending on the type of drain involved and the suspected material causing the clog.

Preventing Outdoor Drain Problems

letters

The principles of protecting outdoor drains are similar to keeping indoor drains flowing freely. Mainly, the focus is to let water in and keep foreign debris out. This can be difficult enough inside the home, but in outdoor drains, the problem can be even more complicated since the variety of debris can vary so widely. Some tips to keep outdoor drains from clogging are:

  • Only have drains installed by qualified professions
  • Install sump traps to stop dirt and leaves from making their ways into the piping
  • Clean traps often
  • Install gutter guards to stop leaves from clogging underground drainage lines
  • Clean strainer screens for french drain systems
  • Rake leaves and bag grass clippings to prevent them from washing into drains

By taking these steps, homeowners can protect the valuable drains that protect the foundation of their home.
