How to Select the Right Size and Shape for New Dining Room Tables from Duvall & Co.

A challenging aspect of purchasing new furniture for a home is making sure the items are the right size for the intended room. Dining room tables are especially tricky because these pieces come in many sizes with countless seating options. The versatility is an advantage, but it also affects how the piece blends in and what it does for the room’s style.

Duvall & Co. is a family-owned custom furniture maker from Wake Forest, NC, specializing in wood design, including dining room tables. Here, these furniture experts explain key dimensions to consider when planning the appropriate size and position for a dining room table.

How to Measure Space for Dining Room Tables

Seating

Dining room tables typically fit from two to ten people, depending on the size of the table. However, not all seating options are consistent with these arrangements. For example, most single-seat dining chair options are about 20 inches wide, so it’s best to allow 24 inches of space for each seat at the table.

Optimal spacing will allow enough room for people to get in and out of their chairs comfortably. There should also be enough table space to dine without infringing on the guest in the next seat.

Small dining room tables occasionally warrant extra seating, so consider a round table or trestle type that combines benches with standard dining chairs. Armless dining chairs also allow for closer seating during gatherings and less space lost around the table when tucking the chairs in after the meal.

Dining Room Tables and Aisle Space

The ideal aisle space will allow people to move around the room comfortably without feeling cramped around the dining room table. All dining room tables should have a clearance of at least 36 inches on all sides from the wall. The measurement also applies to other furniture items or features, like a fireplace or sideboard.

When estimating the maximum size for a dining room table, it’s easiest to measure the length of the room and subtract 72 inches from the total. It is also wise to account for other furniture in the room, keeping it as simple as possible.

For example, if there is a chance that the new furniture addition will block or push a china cabinet into a corner, it’s unnecessary to account for this floor space when considering dining room tables. If the cabinet will be directly behind a dining room chair, measure the room starting from the china cabinet’s front edge, not from the wall behind it.

Dining Room Table Placement

Most dining room tables are in the center of a room. If decorative hanging overhead lighting is available, this remains a lovely focal point for the entire display. A center placement with a 36-inch clearance balances the space and ensures that guests have adequate lighting while at the table

However, if space is limited and no overhead lighting is present, it might be better to push one side of the table closer to a flat wall, arranging the seating on the three open sides.
