3 Ways for Homeowners To Conserve Water To Celebrate Earth Day

Earth Day is an excellent time for homeowners to take a quick look at their home’s systems to see if there’s anywhere they can improve to help Mother Earth. One of the most effective ways to do this is by taking a look at the plumbing system. It’s entirely possible to be wasting water without realizing that it’s happening at all.

Some water habits are easy to change and can impact how much water a household uses. But, even better, saving water not only helps the earth but also helps homeowners save money! So, read on to discover three ways to conserve water in honor of Earth Day.

Turn off the Tap Whenever You Canturn off the tap

The first place to look when considering water-saving techniques is everyday habits. Many people don’t realize that they can easily save water by making simple changes to their water use habits. This includes how homeowners use water when they’re shaving, washing hands, or brushing their teeth. The good rule of thumb is to shut the water off whenever it’s not being used.

A perfect example of this is when someone is brushing their teeth. Letting the water run while someone brushes their teeth is a big waste of water. Turning the cold water faucet for half a second to wet the toothbrush and toothpaste is all that’s needed. Then, once the brushing is done, a few seconds of water flow can clean the brush and wash away the spit. Most of the time, children leave the water on because they haven’t learned any differently. Luckily, this is easy to remedy.

The same basic concept goes for shaving and washing hands. Both only require water to be running at certain times instead of the entire process. Remembering to turn the water off when it’s not being used is a great way to save water for Earth Day.

Determine Whether a Bath or Shower Is BetterBath

As a general rule of thumb, showers use less water than baths. However, this isn’t always the case. Some old showerheads use up to 5 gallons per minute. Luckily, newer showerheads use far less than that. It’s worth it for homeowners to replace the old showerhead with a new one and then advise the rest of the household to take showers instead of baths to save water. Those who live in homes with old showerheads may be better off taking baths to save water.

Have Plumbing System Inspected for Leaks

The third and final tip for saving water in honor of Earth Day involves leak detection. Many homeowners don’t realize they have small leaks in their plumbing system until massive water damage has already occurred. Leaks don’t have to occur only in cold weather.

Some places leak with no apparent cause or couplings, under faucets, and around fittings. This is why it’s a good idea to have a plumbing system inspected for leaks at least once a year. This is also a good way to ensure the health of a plumbing system.
