Outdoor Drains May Need Guarding Against April Showers

Instead of flowers, do April showers bring stinky, sludgy backed-up drains? Homeowners need to be aware of the issues that can come up when the torrential rains of the spring come around. Unexpected pooling and foul-smelling drains are not just a consequence of the precipitation but can indicate a creeping issue in a home’s outdoor pipes.

Look for the Signs of Outdoor Drain Clogs

  • Water Seepage Indoors: Are there puddles appearing in the laundry room? If there is no leak indoors, this can be an indication of an outdoor clog.
  • Water Seepage or Flow Outdoors: Perhaps it is not coming up inside the house. The same problem can exhibit itself on the outside. If a homeowner notices water pooling when the puddles of rain have all dried up, this may indicate a clog below the surface within the outdoor piping.
  • Gurgling Sounds: Sometimes, people blame old pipes for strange noises in a home. While they shouldn’t blame the house boggart, it may be more than just the pipes if someone hears gurgling when they flush the toilet or run the sink. Gurgling indicates there may be an obstruction in the drain hindering the flow of water and air through the pipes.
  • Slow Flow: The shower taken this morning ended up being a stroll in the puddle. Water that was up to the ankles has now completely emptied, but any homeowner knows that this is never a good sign. While the solution may be as simple as cleaning the hair from the bathtub drain, the slowed-down water drainage may indicate that something has blocked an outdoor drain.
  • Malodorous Drains: That smell coming from the outdoor grate isn’t supposed to be there. Persistently smelly drains are likely smelling bad because there is a clog in the pipe, keeping sludge that would normally be washed down lying stagnant inside.

When the Professionals Clear the Drains

There are two primary methods of drain clearing used by professional plumbers: snaking and hydro-jetting. Homeowners are not likely to see a professional using any of the drain opening chemicals found on department store shelves. These acidic substances, while perhaps destroying clogs, can damage the pipes. Weakened drain pipes can rupture, causing a serious plumbing disaster involving using construction equipment to dig up a yard to replace pipes. The two methods below are much less damaging to the pipes and typically more effective than chemical drain openers.

Snaking involves using an auger, a power tool with a long cable attached to a hook-like head that spins into the drain pipe and uses the physical force of the head to either drive through and break up the clog or grab hold of and remove it.

On the other hand, hydro-jetting uses a high-pressure stream of water to punch the clog to pieces and send it down the drain. This method may be the least damaging due to only using water pressure.

Preventing Future Outdoor Drain Blockages letters

There are simple solutions for keeping drains cleaned and functioning after a clog has been cleared.

  • Keep drains clear of debris. Remove leaves and other detritus from the drain grate.
  • Replace a damaged drain grate. Cracks and breakages in the grate allow debris to get in.
  • Keep the pipes clear by only putting water down the drain. People should be mindful of what goes into their drains and whether it could be a future hazard.
