Are all composites created equal?

Composites have taken the deck-building industry by storm.  But why, and what exactly is a composite?

Composite decking boards are man-made from a variety of different processes and materials.  Deciding to build your deck with a composite is an ecofriendly choice because the plastic and wood fibers are derived from recycled materials such as sawdust from mills and furniture factories and shredded polyethylene from milk jugs and shopping bags.

While composite decks are more expensive to build than those made of natural timber, the finished product is cheaper to maintain and resists rotting, mold, mildew, and wood-destroying insects such as termites for a longer period than natural wood decks.

There’s so much to love about Kansas City composite decks!

Throughout the past three decades, a variety of composites have been engineered specifically for deck building.  However, it’s important to understand their differences, so you can make an informed decision according to your wants and needs prior to construction.

Composites differ in the following ways…

Color:  As a general rule, darker colors absorb more heat than lighter shades.  When choosing the color of your dream deck, consider how much sunlight it will be receiving.  If you absolutely want a darkly stained deck, you may want to consider adding a roof or pergola to your original design.

Appearance:  Composites range from looking like obvious timber imitations to highly detailed wood grain.

Texture:  Composite decking boards can be smooth or rough.  However, those with more prominently grained surfaces provide more grip, so keep this in mind if you live in a rainy area or building the deck around a pool.

Now let’s take a brief look at the different types of boards available…

Textured Grain:  Both sides of the board have a rough, cut-in “grain” that helps conceal scuff marks and scratches.

Two-Faced:  One side of the plank has a wood-grain appearance, while the other side is brushed.

Plastic-Wrapped:  Sealed with a durable resin, these boards are beautifully stained and have the strength to resist scratches and fading.

Embossed Grain:  These gorgeous boards have deeper graining because their manufacturing process involves pressing rather than cutting.

Which composite “wood” you choose?

As you can clearly see, there are several types of composite decking boards available that will satisfy the style and architectural needs of every happy homeowner.

While each composite differs in appearance and quality, they also vary in price, which is why it’s important to figure out how much you’re willing to spend on your project.
