Install Water-Saving Fixtures

The water fixtures of a home, like sinks and tubs, are the most common causes of high water bills and water waste. The average American household uses 88 gallons of water a day and spends over one hundred dollars a month on water. A quick and easy way to save money on those water bills is by installing water-saving fixtures

  • Sink Faucets: The average sink faucet pushes out 2.2 gallons per minute. High-efficiency sink faucets produce 1.5 GPM. The result is a savings of 30% off the monthly water bill and a more energy-efficient home.
  • Shower: Shower faucets are another common source of water waste and high water bills. The average shower produces water at a rate of 2.5 GPM. High-efficiency showerheads produce about 1.75 gpm, saving another 30% on water bills and improving the home’s efficiency.
  • Low-Flow Toilets: New “High-Efficiency Toilets,” also known as “low flow toilets,” flush less than 1.3 gallons of water per flush compared to the 3.5 gallons most older toilets flush. Low-flow toilets can save a family of four up to 20,000 gallons of water a year.

Choose Energy-Efficient Water Heaters

Energy-efficient water heaters save money and energy through a variety of different methods. Older models of water heaters are energy wasters, usually consisting of a large, constantly heated tank of water. Newer models are more efficient heaters, but there are several options to choose from when considering upgrading to a greener model.

  • Tankless Models: Tankless water heaters produce water on-demand. The water is heated when needed and does not sit in a tank constantly reheating itself. Overall, the on-demand system requires less energy than older models. They also take up less space than older models. However, tankless models do cost more than traditional tanked models and may require retrofitting the home’s system.
  • Solar Models: Solar water heaters rely on solar energy to heat the water. The tank is connected to a series of solar panels located on the roof. The energy gathered from the panel then warms the water in the tank. These models can be pricey to install and only work well in areas with access to clear skies and sunshine most of the year.
  • Condensing Models: Condensing models capture hot exhaust gases that would typically leave the home through a flue. Instead, the gases are redirected to a heat exchanger located in the tank. Condensers cut energy costs by 30% for the homeowner, but they usually require reconfiguration and high up-front costs.

Homeowners can choose an energy-efficient water heater that’s best for their home with the help of a local plumbing expert.

Create "Green" Habits at Home

Aside from adding energy-efficient fixtures to the home, homeowners and their families can develop “greener” habits to improve their home’s energy-efficiency. family

  • Shorten Showers: While everyone loves a long, hot shower, the water bill certainly does not. Showers are a major source of water-waste in a home. Consider saving water by shortening showers to fifteen minutes or less.
  • Save Dish Washing Energy: A simple way to save money and make the home greener is by scraping the dishes. No, really! Scraping the dishes before washing them either by hand or in the dishwasher will make the dishwashing go faster and more efficiently. Installing a smaller and more energy-efficient dishwasher can help homeowners save on water bills, too.
  • Detect and Fix Leaks: Leaks are a common source of water waste in the home. By having a local plumber stop by to detect and fix any leaks, homeowners can reduce the amount of water being wasted in the house.

Homeowners can make their home a little “greener” to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day all year round by following some of these helpful tips!
