Make Your Home Greener With These Three Tips This St. Patrick’s Day

St. Patrick’s Day is not just about wearing green to avoid getting pinched. It’s also an excellent time for homeowners to utilize some “green” habits. Instead of the fleeting feeling of another St. Paddy’s Day come and gone, homeowners that choose to make their home a little greener get to enjoy a sense of accomplishment all year. One of the significant benefits of the following tips is the impact on the utility bills. Saving water and energy both helps the environment and helps homeowners continually save money.

Fixtures to Save Water

When the conversation turns toward saving water, there’s no more powerful way than installing water-saving fixtures in the home. It used to be that if homeowners wanted to save water with new fixtures, they had to deal with pitiful water pressure. Fortunately, that is not the case anymore.

Homeowners have a couple of different options when it comes to saving water with new fixtures. Aerating fixtures mix air and water together to give the water flow a good amount of pressure while using less water overall. There are also flow-restrictors that can reduce the water flow by as much as 1 gallon per minute. These are available as faucets and showerheads. Many aerators can even be installed in existing faucets with ease.

Efficient Water Heaters

Water heaters are essential for modern, sanitary life. Like fixtures, they have come a long way in recent years. There are several different types of efficient water heaters that can save on energy costs. Overall, the best thing homeowners can do is look for a certified Energy Star water heater, as these are more efficient than standard models.

But there are also plenty of options among water heater types so that homeowners can save even more energy. For those in sunny climates, solar water heaters are available. Tankless water heaters are also becoming widely popular around the world because there is no need to maintain the temperature of the water in the holding tank. Instead, tankless systems quickly heat up water as soon as it is needed. Tankless water heaters are expected to last nearly twice as long as traditional models.

New “Green” Habits

Lastly, homeowners can adopt some simple, eco-friendly habits that will help them save money, water, and energy. Although these habits may not seem like much at first, they are very powerful because they add up over time.

Some of these habits, such as turning off the water while brushing one’s teeth or shaving, are easy to implement. Anytime the water isn’t being used, it should be shut off. This could even include the 10 or 15 seconds during hand washing. Another powerful water-saving habit involves cutting back on shower time for one or two minutes. Even if one or two people in the house do this daily, they could save hundreds to thousands of gallons of water a year.

Using the dishwasher only when it’s full is a great way to conserve water. Or, better yet, washing dishes by hand is a great way to save water and reduce energy consumption. Any way a homeowner finds to reduce water usage even by a few seconds should be considered a win. Those seconds of running water add up to gallons, so turning off the water whenever possible is a great habit to get into.
