Alvin Wolff Discusses How Law Firms Are Adapting to Major Changes During Times of Social Distancing

Many of the top law firms across the country are going above and beyond for their clients, trying to make things happen, even during a time of social distancing, when courtrooms are closed, and insurance adjusters have more leverage than they normally would. But in the legal field, with cases piling up due to closed courtrooms, many lawyers have found it difficult to adjust, making the switch to practicing law and handling business online, with programs such as Zoom. Case Engine, a digital marketing, and public relations firm for attorneys, sat down with one of the top attorneys in the state, Alvin Wolff of Wolff and Wolff Trial Attorneys, to discuss some of the biggest changes he and his firm have made in 2020 and 2021, due to social distancing restrictions.

Case Management and Closed Courtrooms

How can trial attorneys go to trial during a pandemic, when most courts are still closed? They can’t. Many of the leading trial attorneys all over the country are patiently waiting for courts to open their doors so they can begin to tackle their mounting backlogs of cases that have yet to see any real progress.

Alvin Wolff of Wolff and Wolff has been practicing law for 41 years and works alongside his son. The firm primarily focuses on personal injury, medical malpractice, premises liability, and auto accidents.

When asked about the types of major changes he’s encountered in 2020 and 2021, due to the pandemic, Wolff answered it was transitioning his business to being done over Zoom or by phone. Additionally, being trial lawyers, they have not had any trials for quite some time, but he is hopeful that it will soon change. In St Louis county, where most of his cases are, he has been getting court dates for 2022.

Changes in Caseload

With stay-at-home orders in place in many states all over the country, lawyers have also experienced changes in the form of the types of cases they routinely handle. These days, Wolff explained with fewer people being on the road there were fewer car accidents. There were fewer people going to stores, so there were fewer premises liability cases. Wolff stated he gets calls all day regarding medical malpractice cases, and he will look at 30, and will only take one. He has noticed the best cases have not come from advertising rather, but by word of mouth and referrals from other attorneys.
