Low Indoor Air Quality Can Kill the Mood This Valentine’s Day - Don’t Let It

Poor indoor air quality sneaks up on most homeowners. There’s usually no drastic change to the air in the home. After all, it’s impossible to see most indoor air pollutants with the naked eye. And if there’s one thing that can ruin the mood, it’s poor indoor air quality. It can make household members seriously sick, trigger allergies, and generally make breathing miserable. Luckily, homeowners can do a few things to clean up their indoor air quality. Read on to discover how.

Indoor Air Pollutants

Most people think that the air inside their home is better than the air outside, but this isn’t always true. Some studies show that indoor air quality is often much worse than outdoor air. That’s because the air outside is constantly moving and shifting and becoming refreshed as trees release oxygen. But indoor air quality relies on things like filters and manmade systems to stay fresh. And when homeowners fall behind, the air quality drops quickly.

Common indoor air pollutants include airborne viruses, overly moist air, volatile organic compounds, radon, dust, pesticides, and bacteria. Each of these pollutants can negatively affect the people (and pets) who breathe them in - especially those with lung problems, the very young, and the elderly.

The Difference Between Air Purifiers and Air Sanitizers

One of the best ways to clean up indoor air quality is to use an air purifier or an air sanitizer. But, what’s the difference? Is one better than the other? Well, it depends on the need. Air purifiers work by removing harmful particles from the air by means of filters and fans. Air purifiers pull air into the unit, send that air through filters (like HEPA filters), and then send the clean air out again. These require that users replace or clean the filters on occasion. Some air purifiers even use electromagnetism to charge particles, so they are removed from the air.

On the other hand, air sanitizers don’t actually remove particles from the air. Instead, they use ultraviolet light to neutralize any harmful bacteria, viruses, volatile compounds, and other pollutants. Essentially, when harmful particles pass through an air sanitizer, they come out the other side harmless. Sanitizers are fairly easy to integrate into an existing HVAC system, making them a preferred and cost-effective method for cleaning the air in a home.

Tips to Improve Indoor Air Quality

Other tips to keep the indoor air clean are relatively easy to do with a little time and effort. The best thing homeowners can do is keep their house clean. A cleaner house means fewer particles floating through the air. Regular filter changes are the next best thing to keep a home’s air clean. Those with pets should change their filters every two months or so, whereas people without pets can change them every three months.

On nice days, opening the windows is a great way to get some clean, fresh air into the house, believe it or not. A breeze through the house can help push harmful pollutants out while bringing clean air in. It’s also worth it to have the HVAC system maintained twice a year, which will help keep the pollutants to a minimum and help filters last longer.
