4 Tips for Designing an All-Season Deck

Kansas City, United States - February 6, 2021 / All Weather Decks /

When you want to observe nature’s beauty from the comfort of your home, a three-season or all-season deck is a worthwhile investment.  However, it’s important to first consider how you will utilize this unique space.  Each flip of the calendar’s page will bring a variety of weather, so your ideal covered deck must be designed to keep you comfortable regardless of the elements.

Appreciating the outdoors never felt so good!

There’s a range of options that work together to make an enclosed deck spectacular.  However, it’s imperative that you set a budget first and foremost or you’ll be feeling like a squirrel who didn’t store enough nuts for winter.  Once this has been determined, it’s time to start with the details that will be the foundation of the design.

Let the light shine in!  Deciding the best location for your deck is the most important part of the design process.  Just as the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, you want your enclosed deck to be a bright and cheery place.  Think about the layout of your home.  If it’s possible to build the deck on the north-facing or north-east facing side of the house, this is what you should do to enjoy your new addition to its fullest potential.  However, when the weather grows cold and the days become shorter, installing lighting will enable you to enjoy your deck even when it’s dark outside.

Size matters.  The last thing you want to do is spend money on creating an all-season space that fails at satisfying your main goals.  For example, if the covered deck is too small, entertaining will be nearly impossible because you and your guests will feel cramped and uncomfortable. Larger decks are ideal for a variety of gatherings but depending on how you want to use the space, can look quite different. If you want an all-weather space, consider installing windows and maybe ceiling fans to keep everyone comfortable in the warmer weather and a fireplace for those colder months (Nothing beats the warmth and ambiance of crackling flames when Jack Frost pays a visit.). This allows you to enjoy your all-weather covered deck year-round!

Say “Hello!” to fresh air and cool breezes.  The type of windows you choose is extremely important.  If you like to enjoy the scent of spring or the smell of the autumn air, you will probably be happiest with windows that can be opened to reveal screens, so you can let the breeze in while keeping bugs out.  Another option is to install windows you can open in addition to stationary glass windows.

The finishing touch that will make a world of difference.  Prior to adding furniture, you’ll want to consider covering the floor with some type of carpet/space rug.  Not only will it help insulate the room, but it will keep the space quieter by muffling sounds.  Regardless of whether you decide to go with indoor/outdoor carpeting or an area rug, your all-season deck will look and feel quite cozy!

Get ready to love your deck no matter what the seasons have in store!
