How Much Does It Cost to Replace Countertops?

Countertops are another major part of the remodeling project and budget. There are two types such as; natural stone versus and engineered quartz composite. If you take a look at them you can see the differences between the material comparisons between granite and the quartz composite.

For a long time quartz was really gaining steam and it still is. But there still is absolutely a place for natural stone. Stone can be sealed so it could definitely require a little more maintenance when it comes to natural stone.

But in working with professionals, a lot of it comes down to the wearability, the maintenance, and then the style. Because so often things can kind of go off the rails when it comes to renovating. If you're not working with a professional, very often people fall in love with this material and this cabinet. It doesn't necessarily mean they work together, and when you're working with professionals, what we do very well at is make sure all of these materials complement each other.

When working with a professional,

  • It's important to know that when the project is finished.
  • You should have a larger return on life and a larger return on your investment. That's what we strive to create for all of our clients.
  • When we're putting those materials and solutions together, we want them to have a long-lasting, positive impact on your life.

When people come in and look at it everything fits and it works well and compliments each other. It's kind of like in a way, putting together a piece of music. We want that flow in that rhythm. That's a big part of what we do because we don't want to put a wrong note here and there, it's in the details.

When selecting materials like this, it's important that they fit the application. Because sometimes with the application you want to put it into a project, another material might actually be better suited for that application. Because there are definitely differences in characteristics, in regards to things like overhangs, or for durability, for heat, etc., different things like that.

When we're working with clients, we look at so many different facets. Not just how it is going to look, also how is it going to function and what all is involved in this. When we're looking at renovating a space, it truly requires engineering the entire space and making sure the materials procured, are proper for that application., That's so important, and it gets overlooked.

You can see things on HGTV and you get excited. However, it doesn't necessarily mean it's going to work or that it's going to create a long-lasting or a long-term investment for you. That's really what we work hard at making sure of for our own clients. That’s really important because this is a huge investment.

A kitchen or a bathroom is going to be the largest investment you make in your home typically. You want to make sure it’s invested properly, no matter what your investment amount is. Plus, you also must have a realistic expectation of what should be invested in the renovation to make the most of them.

It’s also important to look at the longevity of the design or the longevity of the solution that was presented. Is it going to meet your needs because of the cost of it? It's important that whatever is being done isn't something that will be rejected because it no longer fits your lifestyle or your family or your needs.

We're always looking at what's coming. We don’t want to give you something that's dated or even what homeowners are seeing now. We're looking, one or two years into the future, and that's where our designs go.

Kitchen Remodeling from Start to Finish

It is always interesting to talk about a timeline because when you're looking at a renovation project, we often get the question of how long does it take to renovate?

As usually what happens is; people either call and they're referred to us by a friend or a neighbor, or maybe they've walked past the showroom or they've seen something somewhere on Houzz or what have you. We usually schedule an appointment to talk by Zoom, so we can get a real understanding of what it is you're looking for.

Some of the things we ask are: What are your goals for your project? What is the budget? These are really important parts of the conversation that we need to have right at the beginning. We understand! You get really excited and you should! It's a great thing to do.

Renovating is life-changing, but you want to have realistic expectations of what your budget will afford you. That's a really important part of the conversation right up front because you don't want to have an expectation of this or have all of these ideas, yet your budget doesn’t meet what your expectations are. We want to help you with that.

If you don't have that figured out, it's certainly something that we can help walk you through and give you some resources on that. Typically, what happens is, after that, if you decide you want to proceed and work with us then we have a couple of meetings, we come out to your home, and then we would enter into a design agreement.

If it is a full kitchen and bath renovation that needs a design service and at this point, we have Benchmark that if it's only to tear out a basic kitchen and put a similar kitchen in with maybe some nice accessories or changing the cabinets, but if we're not doing a footprint change, then Benchmark can handle that, and we can skip the design phase.

Benchmark Home Services was born out of the need from our clients to have longer longevity of service that we offer them. With Benchmark, we're able to offer long-term relationships with our clients to help them maintain and enjoy their home via great tradesmen who work for us. It worked and allows people to be more worry-free.

Benchmark was born out of that kind of honey-do list. We're working in their home on a long-term renovation and they start to get to know us, and they like us and they have other projects that need to be done in the home. We're happy to help them with that, and that's how Benchmark was born.

Now we have Benchmark, which offers these smaller projects. Maybe you don't want a large renovation, but you have this honey to-do list or you want to change just the countertop and the backsplash. Or maybe you want some built-ins or some sort of small projects that don’t need a lot of design.

But you need pro-tradesmen to be there to do the work properly and a company to stand behind it to make sure that it's a long haul. We handle small projects to large projects. We even do additions as well. We are here to serve you from these basic projects through that design-build when it comes even to doing additions.

Kitchens and baths are where we started. Our passion started in cabinetry at the cabinet shop. We do have a passion for it. We love what we do. We love serving clients. We love making spaces the best they can be. We love doing what we can to really provide an experience for our homeowners that is stress-free, knowing they're working with true professionals that are there to service them and take care of them.

Kitchen Remodeling: How much Time do You Need?

As Capozzi Design Group,

  • We're going to enter into a design agreement based on 10% of your budget.
  • Then, we're going to work through those plans and see what the plans look like. That's really important, and it can take a month or two to develop that.
  • Once we have everything finalized, we order the cabinets and countertops.

When it comes to installation, we have a great team of installers. As we mentioned we are working out of Solan, and we have a warehouse space there. We like to start a project when everything is in. With the pandemic, there have been supply chain disruptions that have been so much more than anticipated.

But we have a warehouse we stage at, and this is where our guys are dispatched from. They come in, we have planning and training meetings here. Once everything starts coming in we start building our schedule and working up to that countertop installation. Because, once we get everything set-in ready for the countertop, (the cabinet or the counters are laser measured), it's like a two-week delay from getting the counters.

And once everything is set, we're close to having everything, all the finished materials are installed. Then that gets us down to unpacking and enjoying it. For us, it comes down to the number one thing is the communication from step one all the way through or phase one all the way through phase six. That communication is the key.

What's new in the kitchen cabinet world and what are the trends for 2021?

Black and contrast. But not the full black, maybe matt black. We're seeing a lot of matt black cabinetry. That's the perfect way to say it, that kind of black and white look. We’ve seen the matt black for a long time, as it's been around for a few years in hardware and plumbing, and what have you. Now we're really seeing it in cabinetry.

The other thing that is really interesting is the appliances. We're seeing black stainless in appliances. A bit of a move away from that kind of shiny stainless that we were used to. That is a very new trend and is becoming popular. As for the matt finishes, there's a paint matt finish as well as there's new material out that is really exciting to see. It creates a self-healing surface.

With all these different price points and depending on what our clients are looking for, we're going to have a lot of different options. Even when it comes to matt black there are different ways to achieve that, and that all comes in different price points. But technology is certainly taking us many places, even in the kitchen and bath industry, into places that we could never have imagined before.

Which kitchen cabinets are easy to clean?

A lot of that has to do with how you cook. First, we need to answer these questions:

  • What do you really like in your kitchen?
  • What kind of cooking are you doing?
  • Are you doing a lot of braising and creating smoke?
  • Are you doing a lot of heating?

That's how you're going to maintain that. You have to look at how that's being utilized.

But the paint finishes are the most delicate, that's a good way to put it. When you use light paint finishes, you're going to see fingerprints, you're going to see dirt and again; if it's not maintained properly, a painted finish will fail before anything. When it comes to stains, you should have a long-lasting finish because of the topcoats they're able to use on a stained cabinet versus, versus a painted cabinet.

Those are the most popular by far. We're starting to see a move towards thermo foil, which we saw that way back in the day, and it's coming back around. It's kind of the second generation, and that is basically a thin version of a laminate. That's very cleanable but again, you will get what you pay for.

How long will the kitchen cabinets last?

It depends on how they are being used and the construction that you have, How many people are using them? Do you have a mass-produced cabinet or semi-custom or do you have something that's truly made like furniture pieces that are going to last longer? It's a lot better construction. There's a lot that goes into that. One thing is, you have the cabinet sides, you need to look and be aware of how thick they are as well as the material that has been used. You can have the same brand of the hinge, but it does not make them all equal. At this point we say, buyer beware! Because you have to do your research or work with a reputable firm that's going to stand behind it and has vetted these companies and can educate you. Because there are so many variables.

It's not like you can look online and decide. You are relying on professionals that can educate you to help walk you through those differences. The box construction, the drawers, the guides, the hinges, and the warranty are the important details you need to be aware of.

Also, you need to keep in mind that it's not a one size fits all. Remodeling is something that is customized for you.

What is the best color for a small kitchen area?

Part of it depends on, is there natural light? There's a lot that goes into that as well. But it's in a general sense that keeping it light will make it look bigger. My stove and refrigerator are side by side on an inside wall. I know this will change the footprint to move outside the wall. How difficult is this to do? A lot of times having a stove right next to the refrigerator doesn't meet the guidelines we follow. A lot of times when we're renovating, we want to fix those kinds of flaws. From the beginning, we need to know how that impacts and what it's going to take to move that. All of that is very site-specific anywhere from, what's it going to take to move those mechanical needs to service those appliances, as well as what obstructions or limitations space has. It's really very site-specific.
