What Are The Symptoms Of Shin Splints?

Milwaukee, United States - January 28, 2021 / Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists /

Shin splints are a painful condition caused by overuse of the shinbone (tibia) muscles. It causes radiating pain in the shin that worsens with exercise. Shin splints can be caused or exacerbated by intense exercise, sports, and running. Our podiatrists in Milwaukee explain more here.

What Causes Shin Splints?

Shin splints are caused by stress and inflammation of the shinbone and the muscles connecting to the shinbone. You are more likely to suffer from this condition if you have flat feet, weak ankles, weak hips, or don’t warm up prior to exercise. Other factors include:

  • Running on hard surfaces
  • A recent increase in strenuous exercise
  • Ill-fitting shoes

It is possible to reduce your risk of developing painful shin splints. If you’re starting a new exercise routine or want to take up running, make sure that you wear shoes that properly support your feet and take it slow. Your body needs time to adjust to the increase in exercise!

Shin Splints Symptoms

Medial tibial stress syndrome (shin splints) causes throbbing and aching in your shin area when walking, running, and exercising. It may also cause:

  • Inflexibility of the leg
  • Difficulty exercising
  • Difficulty walking
  • Increased pain when attempting to lift your ankle and flex your foot upwards

Treatment Options

If our podiatrist diagnoses you with shin splints, orthotics may be recommended to support your feet. It may also be recommended that you discontinue or reduce strenuous exercise and running until your injury has healed. You can also ice your leg and use pain relievers while your shin splints heal.
