What To Know About Emergency Furnace Repair

Winter is the busiest time of year for furnace repair companies. Homeowners who wait too long to address a problem with their furnace could be left waiting in a cold house for hours and hours. This is why it’s good for every homeowner to know when to call for a heating emergency. Waiting until the heater fails completely is never a good idea. And it’s very rare that a furnace doesn’t present some early indications that something is wrong. Read on to discover when to call for emergency furnace repair.

Cold Air on a Cold Night

When the furnace kicks on and all that comes out of the vents is cold air, it could mean trouble. However, cold air from the vents doesn’t always mean that the furnace has failed. Homeowners should check a few things before calling a furnace repair service. The first thing to look at is the thermostat. Check to see if the fan is set to “On” instead of “Auto.” If the fan is set to on, it will blow air even when the furnace isn’t generating heat.

The second thing to look at is the air filter. A dirty air filter can cause the furnace to overheat and shut off in an attempt to protect the heat exchanger from damage. If the filter is dirty, replace it and see how the furnace operates after that. Lastly, homeowners should check to see if the pilot light is on. If it’s out, the furnace won’t be able to provide heat to the home.

Loud Furnace Noises

noises

Loud noises from the furnace or vents can be frightening and may be cause for concern. However, no furnace operates without making some kind of noise. This is why it’s important to know what noises mean trouble.

Some of the noises include:

  • A bang or boom noise may mean that there’s a gas buildup in the heating system, which should be fixed immediately. However, a faint band or boom could also be the result of expanding vents. It’s usually pretty easy to tell the difference between the two, but homeowners are advised to shut down their furnace and call a professional if they’re unsure what caused the noise.
  • A metal clanking or scraping sound is usually a problem with the fan or motor assembly. This is loudest at the unit and may not be audible from other places in the house.
  • Rattling is usually caused by a loose panel on the furnace unit, but it can also be caused by the heat exchanger. A loose panel should be easily located and secured without the help of a professional. However, if the source of the sound can’t be detected, it’s best to call a professional. A malfunctioning or broken heat exchanger should be addressed as soon as possible.

Do You Smell Gas?

bad smell

It’s fairly common to smell gas in the area around the furnace for a few brief moments as the unit turns on. However, homeowners that smell gas anywhere else in the house or for more than a few moments near the furnace may have a gas leak. If the furnace seems to be malfunctioning and there’s a gas smell, homeowners should turn off the heater and call a professional HVAC company right away.
