Does Your Deck Feel Small - Check Out These Tips

Kansas City, United States - January 11, 2021 / All Weather Decks /

Refurbishing a small deck to make it look bigger is an exciting venture that will invigorate your outdoor living space while exercising your creative talents.  Once you grasp how to use special techniques that trick the eye, you can have fun combining them to create a modest deck with a roomy feel.

Small-scale Kansas City Decks Can Be Cozy in a Big Way!

While you may never be able to host a wedding party in your backyard, these tried-and-true methods will make your little deck feel spacious and inviting.

Extend your indoor living space.  We’ve all heard the saying, “Bring the outdoors in,” but the reverse works wonders when you want to make a diminutive deck look larger.  Bring the indoors out by decorating your deck with objects that match the colors and textures of your interior living space.  For example, if the room leading to the deck is adorned in blues, greens, and pinks, put flowers and herbs in ceramic pots of these colors and place them around the deck.  Adding an area rug and pillows with these same colors will carry the living room’s atmosphere onto the deck.  When the doors leading to the deck are kept open, the two spaces merge to create one big airy room that makes entertaining a delightful experience.

Keep seating simple, but creative.  Nothing makes a deck look smaller than bulky furniture pieces.  Small decks need to retain as much floor space as possible to appear spacious, so it’s smart to stick with furniture that has a delicate appearance.  While a loveseat and coffee table are a nice choice, guests are usually left standing.  Going with a pub table and stools or a folding teak table with matching folding chairs are excellent space savers for small decks.  If you’re concerned about not having enough seating for guests, keep extra stools and chairs on the deck, but use them as plant stands or end tables until they’re needed for their true purpose.

Ripe for a stargazing party!  When you are dealing with a small deck, you can create the illusion of a larger area by drawing one’s eye upwards with hanging pots, wall planters, chimes, wispy drapery, and hammock chairs.  Another fancy trick is to drape lights overhead and allow them to extend into the yard.  Doing this will blur the deck’s borders thus making it appear more spacious.

Less is more.  Be careful not to overcrowd your deck with decorations, plants, and candles or it will feel cluttered.  Stay away from large potted plants and oversized hanging decorations because they’ll reduce floor space and feel overpowering.
