Tips from a Kansas City Deck Building Pro - What size deck is right for you?

Kansas City, United States - December 16, 2020 / All Weather Decks /

If you’re like many people, once you’ve decided to build a deck you might think bigger is better.  However, that’s usually not the case.  Rather than thinking in terms of size, it’s better to think in terms of “best fit” for your home and your needs.

While it’s natural to dream about building a deck big enough to host volleyball championships, this simply isn’t realistic or smart.  There are several design aspects to consider before construction can begin on a deck that will give you the size and versatility required to satisfy daily needs and accommodate special occasions.

General guidelines to help you determine the perfect sized deck:

An attached deck should not be larger than 20% of your home’s square footage.  Too often, people build a deck that’s too large to fit the scale of the house and this often leads to homeowners exceeding their budget.

Design a multi-level deck with a few separate areas.  Adding different layers will create a deck that is aesthetically pleasing, fluid, and functional.

No single section of decking should be larger than the largest room in the house.  You aren’t building an outdoor dance floor.  Decks are meant to be cozy and inviting, so design it as such.

Consider your unique needs for a deck:

How many people will be enjoying the deck?  Consider everyday use as well as social events.

What furnishings will be kept on the deck?  A round dining table will need an area of at least 12’ x 12’, but if you need room for a couch, a couple of chairs, and a coffee table, you will want to extend the deck to at least 15’ x 15’.  If building different levels, consider dedicating a 10’ x 10’ area for grilling and food preparation.  If you have a spa, ask yourself if you want it placed on the deck or sunken into it.  If placing it into the deck, remember to leave an access point to the spa’s panel in the event it needs drained or repaired.

Will the deck be ground-level or elevated?  While you have a lower cost with a ground-level deck, an elevated one may allow for seating or storage below the deck.  If going with a raised deck design, the contractor can install an under deck ceiling as a drainage system to keep the area below the deck dry during Kansas City rain and snow melt.
