It's Time To Add a New Water Heater To the Holiday Wish List

The weather has begun to turn colder, and holiday decorations are popping up everywhere. Schedules become busier as people try to juggle appointments, (virtual) gatherings, and shopping. Homeowners should also be sure to take time to consider a water heater replacement.

Just because water heaters are often tucked away in closets or down in dark basements doesn't mean they can be ignored. Water heaters are vital to a home's operation by providing on-demand hot water for showers, cooking, laundry, and numerous other uses. Here are a few reasons a new water heater might deserve the top spot on that winter wish list.

Age Does Matter

The typical home water heater could last around 20 years. However, this depends on the model, maintenance schedule, and fuel source. On average, most systems last closer to 10 - 15 years. The installation date should be found on the unit, but the information may be found using the serial number and checking the manufacturer's website.

Telltale signs a water heater may be past its prime include:

  • Odd noises
  • Obvious leaks
  • Visible rust
  • Noticeable lack of hot water

Many homeowners have no idea how old their water heater is, but they must be proactive! Even if no problems exist now, they should consider replacing an old water heater before there are any costly surprises.

Could Problems Be Hiding?

Water heater tanks are lined on the inside with glass. Often, the minerals in residential water will eventually build up within the tank and create calcium deposits. Eventually, odds are these calcifications will cause the storage tank to crack and leak.

Even if the water is treated to remove minerals, the possibility of damage still exists. As water is repeatedly heated, it expands. This constant cycle of heating and cooling may cause the glass liner to crack. Sadly, cracks in this tank cannot be repaired. Homeowners may not notice a difference in performance right away, but eventually, the unit will need replacement.

Is that Rust!?

No one expects to turn on a faucet only to find rusty, undrinkable water. Unfortunately, not even steel is immune to the effects of age and the environment. Though the rusting process seems to happen at a glacial pace, once it invades the steel most water heaters are made from, there's little that can be done to stop it.

Homeowners may notice rust in a variety of places: around the pressure release valve on the water heater, at the water inlet, and in the water itself. All of these signs indicate that the water heater may need to be replaced. There is a chance the rust could be coming from galvanized steel pipes. Homeowners should check this by flushing water from the water heater's tank. Is the water still coming out rusty after a few buckets of water have been removed? This proves there is rust in the tank. Replacement is the only option.

Homeowners should contact a knowledgeable plumbing company to replace an old, damaged, or rusty water heater right away.
