Major Changes Law Firms Faced During 2020

Khalid Hasan, of the Kasan Law Firm Discusses How Law Firms Adapted During a Time of Social Distancing

In some parts of the country, businesses have reopened, social distancing practices have been implemented, and the world is slowly, but surely, handling business as usual. But in other parts of the country where the pandemic is surging, many people are working from home, attending meetings online, and struggling to adapt. In the law field, there have also been some major changes. Many lawyers all over the country are doing their best to settle cases, meet with clients, and hope that soon, the courtroom doors will be open once more. Case Engine, a digital marketing and public relations company for lawyers, sat down with Khalid Hasan, of the Kasan Law Firm in Chicago, Illinois, to learn about the challenges and major changes Hasan and his fellow attorneys have dealt with in 2020.

Turning to Technology

Hasan started the Kasan Firm this year. His firm handles roughly 60% of personal injury cases, including medical malpractice, car accidents, and premise liability. Additionally, his firm also practices business litigation for contract disputes and some real estate closings.

When we sat down to discuss what major changes Hasan had to make concerning how he and fellow attorneys handle business at his firm, Hasan replied that making that transition from face to face to video calls such as Zoom and Google Hangouts, was fairly smooth. He made the point that it made everything more convenient. Being able to hop on a call is both easy for the lawyers at his firm and for the clients, as is online scheduling. The biggest challenge for Khalid was being able to implement technology that was scalable and automated as much as possible.

He was finding himself sitting through multiple practice management software demos. Hasan started his firm just this year, so adapting for him was just being more cognizant of change that could come around. Hasan mentioned that when it comes to the clients, they usually want to streamline the process. In the past, his intake process would usually take eight email/phone exchanges to set up a consultation, whereas now, you can just drop the calendar link. Hasan’s firm is located in Chicago, which has a fairly competitive market. Everyone specializes in a certain area of law. Khalid was focused primarily on PI and litigation. “So, in the PI realm, in order to make money, you need to make up that pipeline”. This made things a bit more difficult with the courts being closed. This began enabling the insurance companies to hold the premiums and attorneys are getting offers that do not justify the value of the case. Which then in turn is forcing lawyers to file lawsuits which clogs up that pipeline.

One of his concerns was to keep overhead as low as possible and to operate efficiently. So, Hasan began diversifying his practice areas to help generate cash flow. One of the biggest challenges was being able to deliver value to his clients. Being able to make this process as seamless as possible.

With the use of technology, the Kasan firm is still able to meet with clients and fellow attorneys, however, like many other firms all over the country, the biggest issue is seeing any real case progress, in addition to dealing with claims adjusters who are no longer offering the type of reasonable settlements many lawyers saw before the pandemic hit.

Courtrooms will reopen in the future, but for the time being, Hasan and his fellow attorneys will continue to follow safe social distancing practices and meet their client’s needs by remaining in close communication and handling negotiations via video conferencing software.
