No Need to Be Haunted by a Potential Plumbing Emergency

There is no such thing as a good emergency, especially when it comes to emergencies with the home plumbing system. The plumbing system is one that is used more often than most people think. Washing dishes, watering plants, flushing toilets, washing hands, taking a shower, cooking, bathing the family dog, and the list goes on. When a plumbing emergency happens, all of these everyday tasks are inconvenienced.

Luckily, homeowners can do a variety of simple tasks to prevent these emergencies from taking place.

Keep the Gutters Clear

One of the biggest fall-cleaning tasks is clearing out the gutters. As leaves begin to fall, it can feel like there is a magnet drawing them all directly into the gutter just to give homeowners one more thing to clean. And while it can take a while to clean them all out, it is a critical step to preventing plumbing emergencies. If the gutters become clogged with leaves, twigs, dirt, or other debris, it is difficult for the water to drain off the roof and away from the house.

Because of this, it can lead to a leaky roof or other water damage to the interior or exterior of the home. Additionally, clogged gutters often become home to pests, rodents, and insects that can cause all sorts of problems on their own. Therefore, even though it can be a pain to do, it’s essential to clean out the gutters to prevent these issues from taking place.

Insulate or Wrap the Pipes

Insulating and wrapping the plumbing pipes is another excellent way of preventing plumbing emergencies. When cold pipes are exposed to warm or humid air, condensation can start to form on the outside of the pipes. This can lead to puddles forming on the floor below the pipes and excess moisture, leading to mold growth or other water damage.

Additionally, as the weather cools down in the fall and winter months, pipes are more prone to freezing. And when pipes freeze, they can burst, causing a major plumbing emergency with all sorts of water damage that is costly to repair. Insulating the pipes can help keep the water in the pipes a bit warmer, so they don’t freeze.

Clean Drains Regularly

Clogged pipes are another major plumbing problem that can lead to emergencies. Depending on where the clog happens, it can be a small plumbing problem, like slow drainage in a sink, or a big plumbing problem, like a backup in the main line forcing wastewater to enter back through the drains in the house. Regularly cleaning the drains can help prevent these clogs from taking place.

While some homeowners automatically turn to liquid drain cleaner to clear out the drains, these products can often do more harm than good because of the extensive list of chemicals that they use. It can actually eat away at the pipes and can be dangerous if it makes contact with a person’s skin. Instead, homeowners should use other devices like plumbing snakes that can be inserted into the drain, grab hold of any clogs, and remove them. Hydrojetting is also a great option but needs to be handled by a professional. This method reaches clogs that are even further down the pipes, clearing them out with minimal damage to the plumbing system.
