Homeowners Don’t Have to Be Haunted by Unexpected Plumbing Emergencies

As the spooky season approaches, no one wants to experience the real-life horror of an unforeseen plumbing calamity. Overflows, pipe breaks, and flooding are just a few emergencies that can get out of hand quickly and cause extensive damage. Fortunately, there are a few simple steps every homeowner can take to help prevent these potentially devastating issues.

Keeping Gutters and Stormdrains Clear

Most people think plumbing emergencies occur inside the home, and for the most part, this is true. But seemingly trivial problems outside, if left unchecked, can wind up causing big trouble indoors or even with a home’s foundation. Rain gutters and storm drains are an integral part of a home’s overall plumbing system, as they capture rainwater and carry it safely away from the house. Especially in humid, rainy climates, it’s crucial to ensure these systems are kept clear and functioning properly.

When gutters, downspouts, and storm drains become clogged with leaves and other debris, rainwater backs up and spills down around the base of the house. If enough water collects here, it can seep down under the house, causing dangerous erosion which can lead to cracks in the foundation. It can also cause massive flooding in a basement or crawlspace, especially in homes without adequate subterranean waterproofing.

Insulating or Wrapping Water Pipes

While freezing is perhaps the most well-known and widely-feared cause of a burst pipe, only those in cold climates need to worry about it. But even those who live in warm or moderate climates would do well to insulate and protect their pipes from the elements.

When cold-water supply pipes are exposed to warm, humid air, condensation forms on the surface of the pipes. This seemingly innocuous moisture can corrode the pipe over time, especially at joints and solder points. The water pressure inside the pipe can then cause the pipe to burst, without warning. Additionally, pipes that deliver hot water can reach very high temperatures and cause severe burns if touched even for an instant. Insulating or wrapping a home’s supply pipes is a fairly inexpensive and easy way to avoid unexpected trouble.

The Importance of Regular Drain Cleaning

When the toilet takes longer than normal to fully flush, or water begins pooling up at their feet during a shower, homeowners are quick to reach for the drain cleaner. But it pays to make drain cleaning a part of the regular routine, even if there are no observable issues.

Over time, debris, hair, soap scum, and other gunk can build up in a drain pipe. This can happen well downstream of the fixture, where it may go unnoticed for weeks or even months. When such a blockage reaches a critical mass, it can cause a sudden overflow or even - in extreme cases - pipe breakage due to pressure buildup. It’s important to remember that when a clog occurs so deep within the drainage system, store-bought drain cleaners just won’t cut it, and a professional will need to be brought in to solve the problem.
