What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Glendale, United States - October 1, 2020 / Bergh Orthodontics /

Many people have crooked teeth and desire a beautiful, straight smile for cosmetic reasons. Not only can braces help you achieve your ideal smile, but achieving that straight smile makes it easier to care for your dental health! But what causes teeth to become crooked in the first place? Our orthodontist in Tujunga, CA, explains more here.

What Causes Crooked Teeth?

Crooked teeth can be caused by:

  • Thumb-sucking – If a child continues to suck their thumb or fingers after a certain age, the habit can cause teeth to shift, affecting the mouth and jaws.
  • Injuries – If you have a tooth knocked out or any other injury to your teeth or jaws, it can cause the teeth to be displaced or shift your jaw. It’s important to any trauma or injury looked at by our orthodontist.
  • Genetics – Your genes inform how your teeth look. Genes can affect the angles of your teeth, your jaw growth, and the size of your mouth, all of which can cause your teeth to displace each other and become crooked.

Possible Health Effects

Having a less-than-straight smile can affect confidence, but it also makes it harder to care for your dental health. Brushing and flossing crooked teeth is difficult and can lead to bacteria buildup, cavities, and gum disease. Malocclusion can also make it hard to chew, leading to teeth grinding (bruxism), and possible tooth breakage.

Orthodontic Options

For mild to moderately crooked teeth, clear aligners may be a good option. However, for severely crooked teeth, malocclusion, or jaw problems, traditional metal braces are the most effective, reliable method to correct your smile.

When it comes to orthodontic treatment, the earlier, the better! The best results come from treatment in childhood or the early teenage years when the tissues in the mouth haven’t yet fused and are easier to adjust. That said, it’s never too late to straighten crooked teeth and get the smile you want.
