What Homeowners Should Know About Sump Pump Installation

Sump pumps are one of the stars of the plumbing system that don’t get enough attention. These submersible devices are essential to stop basements from flooding, especially during a downpour. But what types of homes need a sump pump? And what options are out there?

In this article, an experienced plumbing company is here with plenty of useful information that answers all of those questions.

Why a Home May Need a Sump Pump

While any home can benefit from having a sump pump installed, they are especially beneficial for a few specific situations. If any of these benefits sound life-changing, a sump pump would likely be a great investment.

  • Reduce mold and mildew around the home, especially in the basement
  • Defends against flooding
  • Keeps the basement dry and comfortable all year round
  • Improves indoor air quality
  • Protects the home’s foundation
  • Discourages termite infestation
  • Gives general peace of mind!

If the home rests in an area with frequent flooding, or there is a finished basement that needs to be protected from the threat of flooding, a sump pump should be considered. It’s likely the device most homeowners aren’t aware that they need but could benefit from.

What Are the Different Types of Sump Pumps?

When it comes to choosing a sump pump, it is important to note that there are two different types - pedestal and submersible.

  • Pedestal sump pumps are more visible, with a motor that is mounted on top of the sump. They may not be as long-lasting as submersibles, but they are more economical and easier to service if something breaks down.
  • Submersibles sump pumps, on the other hand, do tend to be more expensive at the outset. However, they more than make up for it by lasting longer and being safer than pedestal units. The motor is mounted and sealed inside the sump.

In either case, the sump pump is installed directly into the basement of the home. As the rain starts to pour, the ground around the home becomes saturated with rainwater. The excess water will drain into the sump pump. Once the level is high enough, the sump pump is triggered and turns on, removing the excess water by draining it from the house and into a storm drain, retention pond, or well.

Which Is the “Right” Sump Pump?

Ultimately, there is no real right or wrong answer to this question. It mainly depends on how much money the homeowner is looking to spend.

Homeowners who have younger children or prefer a more “covert” sump pump would likely be happier with a submersible, even with the additional expense. Those just looking to pump extra water out of their basement and don’t care what it looks like would likely be fine with a pedestal sump pump.

Either way, the result is a cleaner, dryer basement. It’s important to note that sump pumps, even those working fine without any problems, still need to be serviced along with the rest of the plumbing system at least once yearly. Homeowners should also check to make sure it is in working order a few times a year, especially before the rainy season.
