Do They Need a Sump Pump?

Sump pumps are excellent at collecting excess rainwater, run-off, and groundwater from underneath the house and moving it away from the foundation or basement of the home.

Humid areas are particularly known for the collection of excess water underneath a house in basements and crawl spaces due to the constant moisture in the ground. If homeowners find themselves with a wet basement or a crawl space that is constantly wet, it might just be time to consider a sump pump.

Signs They Need a Sump Pump

There are several signs to look for that can point to the need to install a sump pump. Any or all of these signs is a reason to consider installing a pump.

First, has the basement ever flooded? If the answer is yes, then homeowners should install a sump pump. Unless they want their basement potentially destroyed with no way to drain the water should another flood occur.

Second, is the basement finished and needs to be protected against water damage and mold growth? If so, a sump pump is essential. Mold growth due to water seepage in humid areas can happen rapidly and extensively.

Third, if they have a sump pump, is it older than six years? If so, it’s time to think about replacing it. Most sump pumps have a lifespan of six to ten years. Homeowners shouldn’t wait until the last minute, though, or they might find themselves regretting it.

What Types of Sump Pumps Are There?

There are two predominant types of sump pumps to choose from. First, a pedestal sump pump. This is where the motor is mounted on top of or above the pump. With this setup, the pump is more visible and accessible for servicing. This is typically more cost-effective but it may not have as long of a lifespan.

The other option is a submersible sump pump. With this configuration, the pump is completely submerged inside the sump and sealed. This is better for those who need an option that is visually better and it’s safer for children in the home. The unit is harder to reach, however, and so it is harder to service. On average, these types do have a longer lifespan.

When Choosing a Sump Pump

If homeowners are trying to determine which type of pump they want, they should consider the following questions.

Do they already have a sump pump? If so, they could replace the existing version with the same thing if they like and it works well for their needs.

Do they have small children in the home? If yes, then they should choose the submersible option so children won’t be able to get to the motor and potentially get hurt.

Do they have a finished basement and want a sump pump that won’t detract from the visually pleasing atmosphere? If yes, a submersible is the best option.

Do they need a budget-friendly option for now? If so, the pedestal sump pump is probably right for them. It's always best to contact a professional to start the process.
