How Do Tankless Water Heaters Work?

Most people dislike cold showers. People can get that same “brain freeze” that they get from drinking iced coffee or slushies too fast. Thankfully, water heaters provide relief and make the showering experience much more enjoyable.

What many people don’t know is that there are tons of different types of water heaters out there, one of which is a tankless water heater.

What Does a Tankless Water Heater Do?

Tankless water heater heaters still have the same objective as any other water heater: to heat the water. The difference is that tankless water heaters do this as water flows through the device rather than storing the water in a tank to be used later on. That’s why these tankless water heaters are also commonly referred to as instantaneous or on-demand water heaters.

There are two different types of tankless water heaters: gas and electric. They operate very similarly, the only mechanical being how they are powered.

Gas tankless water heaters tend to be more expensive to install but generally have low operating costs over time. They also require annual maintenance checks, while electric tankless water heaters have minimal maintenance needs throughout their lifespans. Electric tankless water heaters are also considered to be more eco-friendly because they rely on the energy source for the house rather than fossil fuels.

Pros and Cons of Tankless Water Heaters

Choosing a tankless water heater is a big decision for a homeowner to make. It’s important that they weigh the pros and cons of tankless water heaters so they understand what kinds of costs and setup are involved.

Pros:

  • Instant hot water: Rather than storing the water in a tank, a tankless water heater can heat water on-demand.
  • Long-lasting: Tankless water heaters typically last double the lifespan of their counterparts.
  • Less bulky: Without a tank, these water heaters save a lot of space, which is especially welcomed in smaller houses.

Cons:

  • High upfront costs: As mentioned, tankless water heaters are more expensive than traditional water heaters. It can take some time before the higher efficiency outweighs the upfront cost.
  • Limited flow rate: If there are a lot of plumbing appliances that use hot water at the same time, the tankless water heater can have a hard time keeping up with demand leading to inconsistent temperatures.

Are Tankless Water Heaters the Right Choice?

When trying to determine if purchasing a tankless water heater is the right decision, homeowners need to go back and weigh all of the pros and cons. Tankless water heaters do require significant financial means to purchase and install, especially if other updates to the plumbing, gas, or electrical system need to be made.

Additionally, if the house is larger or if there is a big family living in the house, a tankless water heater might not be able to keep up. It’s important to take all of these considerations into account when making a final decision with an experienced professional.
