Signs a Home Needs Repiping

There are many signs homeowners can look for that point to the need for repiping. Are there leaks, drippy faucets, a higher water bill than should be, or unexplained water pressure? Does water often have a rust color to it or taste slightly metallic? Any of these reasons are good enough to consider replacing old piping. Old pipes are prone to all sorts of failure and will eventually wreak havoc if not fixed before they start breaking down.

When it's time to replace the home's plumbing, homeowners will have to decide what material to use from copper or Pex. Both have their advantages and disadvantages, so it's essential to make an informed decision.

The Differences Between Pex vs. Copper Pipes

Copper used to be the number one choice for water supply pipes, but not anymore. Now there is a new pipe that has come onto the scene and is making waves called Pex. Pex piping is fast becoming the new choice for remodels and retrofits, while new construction homes still largely use copper piping in construction.

Both function well for water supply, and a local plumbing company can install either. What it comes down to is understanding the pros and cons of each.

Pros and Cons of Pex Pipes

There are significant advantages to Pex piping, but there are also some downsides. Here are several.

red and blue pipes
  • Pro: Less expensive than copper. Copper will always be the more expensive of the two options, so for homeowners looking for a budget-friendly solution, Pex is the way to go.
  • Con: Pex is vulnerable to UV rays and cannot be used outdoors or in extreme cold. Pex is for indoor use only.
  • Pro: More flexible than copper. Pex piping is flexible enough to bend around corners. This removes the need for 45- and 90-degree elbows that copper piping requires.
  • Con: Can't be directly connected to a water heater. Connection requires a copper or PVC line connected to the water heater, which Pex piping can attach to.

Pros and Cons of Copper Pipes

Copper pipes also have advantages and disadvantages. To understand the full scope of what copper pipes offer, homeowners must understand their strengths and weaknesses.

  • Pro: Copper pipes are lightweight. This means less strain on the home, the ability to extend pipes over long distances, and little to no supporting materials needed.
  • Con: Expense. Copper pipes are more expensive than other piping options, and their price is usually dependent on fluctuating market prices.
  • Pro: Fire Resistant. Copper pipes have a high thermal rating and are resistant to fires, so for those looking to use all fire retardant materials, copper is the right choice.
  • Con: Copper can add a metallic flavor to drinking water. For those sensitive to flavors, a different pipe option may be best.
