Clogged Sinks Are a Pain. Here's How To Avoid Them.

No homeowning experience will be a perfect one. Things are bound to break down and need to be replaced or updated. The plumbing system commonly experiences problems. It's not always a big problem. Sometimes it's just small things, like a stubborn, clogged sink that can be a hassle to deal with. Clogged sinks can smell bad, drain slowly, and end up pooling water in the sink bowl. But it can easily be prevented by following a few plumbing best practices.

Cooking Grease Should Go in the Garbage, Not the Sink

Cooking Grease

Any meal that involves cooking meat is almost guaranteed to accumulate some cooking grease in the pan. So what should people do with this cooking grease? Well, the one thing not to do is pour it down the sink!

Cooking grease is one of the biggest causes of sink clogs in the kitchen. Of course, it starts in liquid form, but will eventually solidify in the pipes, form clogs, and prevent water or any other waste from passing through the pipes. The cooking grease could even travel through most of the plumbing system while still in liquid form but poses a large threat once it reaches the main line.

Clogs in the main line prevent waste from exiting the house and instead force the waste to re-enter the house through the drains. Rather than pouring the grease down the drain, homeowners should pour it into a separate bowl or container, let it harden, and scrape it into the trash.

Tips for Appropriate Garbage Disposal Use

Garbage Disposal

Garbage disposals sure do a lot of the dirty work in the kitchen! They can grind small food particles with ease, but they do have their limits.

There are a few best practices that homeowners and their families need to keep in mind when using garbage disposals.

  1. Be sure to scrape plates before washing dishes rather than just throwing everything into the sink and letting the garbage disposal handle it. If there are too many food particles thrown in there at once, they could be more than the device can handle and end up clogging the sink.
  2. Be mindful of what's around the sink. Utensils, salt and pepper shakers, and other small items can accidentally fall into the garbage disposal and wreck the blades of the device and lead to clogs.
  3. Run water while the garbage disposal is on. This will help the garbage disposal break up food particles and put more pressure on the waste to push it through the pipes.

Cleaning Drain Stoppers is a Must

Water Pouring Over Drain Stopper

Most sinks in kitchens, bathrooms, or any other rooms have drain stoppers. Drain stoppers act as a plug that fits into the drain to stop the flow of water, but they can also prevent larger pieces of waste from entering the pipes.

There are several types of drain stoppers. Some can be removed completely, some are pop-up stoppers, and others are twist-up stoppers. Over time, these drain stoppers can get dirty, or worn out, and lead to a clogged sink. Therefore, cleaning the drain stoppers regularly is very important to help the plumbing system stay clear of clogs.
