Central AC vs. Ductless AC Systems

Choosing between a central air conditioning unit and a ductless mini-split system might seem difficult at first. Still, some key differences make central AC a better option for some homes, while the ductless AC is better for other homes. Before making an informed decision on which air conditioning unit to get, one must first understand the key differences between the two systems.

Continue reading to learn all about the differences between central AC and ductless AC.

Learning About Central AC

a central HVAC unit

For many people, central air conditioning is the only option for cooling a home in the most efficient way possible.

A central AC unit works like this:

  • The air is treated in one central location
  • Once cooled, it is dispersed throughout the home
  • Air flows via fans and ductwork
  • The warm hair circulates through the home and makes its way back into the unit
  • The cycle repeats until the house reaches a set temperature
  • Then, the system turns off until the home's temperature begins to rise again

A central AC unit has an outdoor compressor and condenser coil, where the air is conditioned. This unit connects to a furnace located indoors. The furnace is equipped with an evaporator coil.

The warm air comes into the evaporator coil where the refrigerant is released. The refrigerant absorbs the heat from the air, and the cool air is sent to the outside compressor. The compressor and condenser coil work to take the warm air vapors and dispel them outside while simultaneously pushing the cool air indoors once again. The air is then distributed via ductwork throughout the home.

Learning About Ductless AC

a ductless unit

A ductless-mini-split is made up of two components. These two components are an indoor unit and an outdoor compressor. Perhaps the greatest benefit of a ductless AC is that there is no ductwork involved in the process, as the name suggests. However, not all homes are suited for this style of airflow.

Two reasons one might not want a ductless AC are:

  • If it gets too cold in the winter
  • If the house is too big

Ductless AC units are a great addition to smaller homes because each room needs its own unit. That said, in smaller homes, one can get away with not having one in every room.

Regardless of how it's set up, it is still an air conditioner. A ductless unit might cost more initially, but once installed, it will save money in the long run.

Maintenances Needs

People might also go for the ductless unit rather than central air because they require little maintenance. Central HVAC units, on the other hand, require yearly maintenance to keep an eye on the natural progression of the unit as well as the ductwork that keeps the unit working efficiently.
