Everywhere Pipes Need to Be Installed

There are many different parts of a home that require plumbing and pipes to function properly: the kitchen, bathroom, laundry room, and sprinkler for starters. This article will discuss why pipes might need replacement, the different services available, and the tools that a plumber will use to install pipes properly.

When to Get New Pipes Installed

The likelihood of needing all new pipes is much lower in a new home than in an older one. Even if something goes wrong, it will usually just entail a repair. However, older homes have multiple instances where they may need to have some or all of their pipes replaced.

Deciding if a home’s pipes need replacement depends a lot on the age and type of piping. Galvanized steel piping was very common in the 1960s and typically only lasts for about 40 years. This type of piping will need replacement at some point, and it’s usually good to do before a serious problem arises. Copper pipes are much longer-lasting and hold up well, but if they are more than 20 years old, they will be soldered with lead. If there is lead in the water, the pipes will need to be replaced. Even polybutylene plastic, which was used up until the ’90s, has serious problems: it tends to break with age, requiring replacement.

Outside of the materials used, drainage lines and piping will often get overgrown with tree roots or cracked by shifting ground. Sometimes they can be cleaned or repaired, but it often makes more sense to replace the entire line. Sewer drainage issues are extremely unpleasant when they happen, and preventative care or proactive replacement can help prevent a very smelly experience.

Different Types of Installation Services

There are many different types and levels of pipe installation. Some issues, like galvanized steel or polybutylene piping, will probably require an entire re-pipe of a home, while other issues may only need a short section replaced or upgraded.

The two main types of pipe installation are indoor or outdoor. Indoor pipe installation can be pretty straightforward or extremely in-depth, depending on how the plumbing is set up. If there is crawl space access, the pipes can be seen without having to remove walls or floor sections, and the job will be easy. Sometimes, pipes are hidden, and significant portions of the home may need to be torn up to install new pipes, which is especially true if the pipes are buried in the foundation.

Outdoor pipe installation may run from the house to a new access point or connect to water and swerve lines. These installations may require extensive digging to get access, although some companies may be able to run new lies through the old pipes, which does not require excavation.

What Installation Tools Do Plumbers Use?

Plumbers use a variety of tools when installing pipes, and a lot depends on if copper or plastic lines will be used. Either way, they will use a pipe cutter or saw for cutting pipe to length, glue or soldering tools for connecting pipes and fittings, and wrenches, drills, and screwdrivers for tightening and attaching pipes.

A reciprocating saw may be used to cut access holes, and outdoor installations may require a jackhammer and excavator depending on the project. Each job will have a different list of tools, but a good plumber is prepared for almost any situation.

Being aware of what types of piping may need replacing and understanding the depth of the project can help ease the surprise cost of a plumbing problem, and having a good plumber picked out ahead of time will make getting it fixed a much smoother process
