How To Treat Bunions At Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists

Milwaukee, United States - August 21, 2020 / Milwaukee Foot & Ankle Specialists /

Many patients suffer from bunions, which are painful, bony bumps that form on the joints of the feet, generally on the joint next to the big toe, but can also occur on the joint next to the pinky toe. Bunions are caused by your toe pressing against the adjacent toe, causing irritation and enlargement of the joint. There are steps you can take to minimize pain associated with this condition, and surgery is available for those cases that cannot be remedied. Our podiatrists in Milwaukee explains more below.

Causes of Bunions

There are a few causes of bunions, including:

  • Wearing shoes that are too narrow and rub up against the outside of your feet. This also causes your toes to overlap, putting pressure on your joints. Over time, this repeated stress and movement cause irritation and abnormalities.
  • Genetics also plays a factor in bunions, as structural defects can increase your risk of bunions.
  • Developing arthritis. Arthritis damages the cartilage in the joint and makes you more susceptible to bunions.

However, you can take preventive measures to avoid or reduce the risk of developing bunions.

Symptoms of Bunions

Aside from the obvious bony bump on your joints and the pain associated with it, you may also experience other symptoms related to bunions:

  • Callus or corn between your big toe and the adjacent toe
  • Swelling around your big toe
  • Restricted movement of your big toe
  • Stiffness or difficulty moving your toes

Treatments for Bunions

Getting proper fitting shoes will allow movement of your toes. As the bunion heals, you can use bunion cushions to relieve pressure on the joint. If these treatments don’t work and the bunion becomes severe enough, you may have to undergo foot surgery to remove the affected tissue. This should be avoidable if treated properly early on by our podiatrist.

If you’ve suffered from bunions in the past, watch out for re-growth and contact your podiatrist if necessary.
