Cutting Off Dripping Faucets in the Home

Many people are familiar with the saying “it’s so quiet, the drop of a pin could be heard in the room.” Though this might sound like a bit of an exaggeration for how quiet it is, even the smallest sounds can indeed be heard when it’s dead silent. A dripping faucet is one of those sounds. When everyone has headed off to bed, the house gets dark and quiet.

But still, a dripping faucet can be heard all the way down the hall. Pretty soon the dripping starts turning into a rhythm, like an annoying commercial tune that repeats over and over in one’s mind. So stop the nonsense of dripping faucets. It’s time to cut them off once and for all in order to get your plumbing system in working order.

A Drip from the Kitchen Sink

kitchen sink Though a leaking kitchen sink can have many causes, there are three common causes that are likely to be the culprit. The first is a loose or worn-out O ring. An O ring is a small disc that attaches to the stem screw and holds the faucet handle in place. If this ring comes loose or gets worn-down, a leak will start to spring at the base of the faucet.

A second common reason for leaks in a kitchen sink is a worn-out washer. Every time that the faucet is turned on, the washer rubs against the valve seat, so it can become worn over time and results in a leak near the spout. Another common cause is a corroded valve seat.

Corrosion can occur when water sediments accumulate, and this also can cause leaks around the spout. More often than not, faucet leaks are due to normal wear and tear, so they can be difficult to prevent. The best prevention method is to check the faucet parts regularly and replace parts that are getting worn out before a leak starts.

Drips from Bathroom Leaks

More water leaks can occur in the bathroom than anywhere else in the house. There can be leaks from the working sinks, toilets, bathtubs, and showers, or even leaks from the pipes in the walls. Sink faucet leaks in the bathroom are similar to those in the kitchen. They tend to be caused by a worn-out O ring, a worn-out washer, or a corroded valve seat.

A leaking toilet can also have several causes. It is often wear-and-tear of parts, rusted pipes, or a cracked tank or bowl that causes toilet leaks. As for bathtub and shower leaks, they can result from leaking drains. When the bottom of the tub or shower drain cracks, the drain is no longer properly connected to the strainers.

This allows water to seep past the drain and leak onto the bathroom floor. This type of leak can be particularly troublesome because it weakens the floor (aka the ceiling for the room below) and can cause it to buckle. These leaks are tricky for homeowners to fix themselves, so it’s best to call a professional plumber to fix the problem.

Drips that Result in Increased Water Bills

increased water billThough a few drops of water leaking from a faucet doesn’t seem like much, every little bit counts. Many homeowners don’t realize how much water a leaky faucet can waste! A faucet that drips just one drop of water per second can waste up to 3,000 gallons of water a year.

All that wasted water leads to wasted money from high water bills. Therefore, it’s best to fix any leaks in the house as soon as possible, no matter how small they may seem.
