If you’re concerned about your child possibly needing braces, you might be looking for signs that they should visit the orthodontist. Starting early is a great way to ensure dental and orthodontic health for a lifetime, as many problems are easier to fix at a younger age. But how do you know if your child needs braces? Our orthodontist in Tujunga, CA, explains below.
Early Evaluation
It is recommended that children have an orthodontic consultation no later than age 7. This visit doesn’t necessarily mean that your child will need braces; it is only an evaluation of your child’s orthodontic health and bite. Your dentist can tell you if your child would benefit from a visit to our orthodontist if you are unsure.
Signs & Symptoms
Some signs to look for that may point to a need for braces:
- Crowded or misaligned teeth
- Teeth or jaws that aren’t in proportion
- Protruding jaws or teeth
- Thumb sucking
- Mouth breathing
- Difficulty chewing or eating
You may also notice that your child’s teeth don’t meet (open bite), the upper teeth overlap the lower teeth, or that the lower teeth jut out. These are signs that your child will need a bite adjustment.
When Should My Child Get Braces?
The age for your child to get braces depends on their specific case. Usually between the ages of 7 and 13 is ideal, as the teeth are easier to move and, if your child needs other appliances such as spacers or expanders, this is the best age to get those as well. Our orthodontist will help in determining the best treatment plan for your child.
