Finding the Right Air Duct Design

Air ducts are just as essential to the home as they are unique. Each home requires its own customized air ducts to make it as efficient as possible. But how are they designed, and what factors should be taken into consideration? That’s what this article hopes to explore and explain.

Does the Home’s Layout Affect Air Duct Design?

The simple answer to this question is yes. The air duct design revolves directly around the home’s layout.

The entire purpose of air ducts is that they direct the airflow around the home. If they don’t work with the layout, certain areas of the home will be too hot or too cold. That’s why the air ducts are designed to fit with the flow of the home, to both bring and remove heat and air conditioning to where it’s needed.

Air duct design also needs to work with the HVAC system’s Cubic Feet Per Minute (or CFM). The CFM is the measure of the amount of airflow that has to pass through the ducts in order to keep the system working properly.

Ultimately, if the air duct design is inefficient, it can lead to energy loss. This energy loss also shows up on the home’s utility bills.

Are There Different Air Duct Materials?

Air Duct Materials

Air ducts can be made out of a vast amount of different sheet metals. But by far the most common is galvanized steel. This is popular because of the way that it “breathes” by expanding and contracting as it heats up and cools down.

Air ducts can also be made out of aluminum, stainless steel, carbon steel and even non-metallic materials like fiberglass and polyester. In addition, air ducts can also be different shapes depending on the layout of the home and what fits best. While most people think of these ducts as being rectangular, they are also commonly made in round and oval shapes. The shape of the air duct can help its efficiency as well.

What Exactly Is a BTU?

BTU

When it comes to air conditioners and air ducts, one of the common acronyms used is BTU. It is important for all homeowners to understand exactly what a BTU is and how it relates to the HVAC system in general.

To begin, BTU is an acronym for British Thermal Unit. Although it has the word British in it, this is a fairly universal way to measure energy. A single BTU is equal to the amount of energy that it takes to be able to increase a pound of water by 1° Fahrenheit.

Every air conditioning unit has its own specific BTUs. This measurement is used as a reference to how many it is able to either remove or add to the air in the home. But bigger isn't always better. The amount of BTUs a home’s HVAC unit has is closely related to the shape and material the air ducts should be made out of. In the end, everything needs to work harmoniously to be as efficient as possible.
