The Problem With Gas Line Leaks

Most homes are connected up to a gas line. Gas lines ensure you have the ability to heat water, cook on your stove, and even heat a pool. Without gas coming into your home, there are numerous things that wouldn’t function. Anything with a pilot light uses gas. The majority of ovens also use gas. In short, most homes would be lost were their gas lines to suddenly give out, stop working, or spring a leak.

Not only is a malfunctioning gas line frustrating, but it could leave your house freezing in the winter, leave you unable to cook, and cause numerous other issues as well. As soon as you discover a leak, it’s vital that you call out a plumber to assess the problem. Ignoring a leaking line can lead to serious complications.

Keep reading to learn what a gas line is and what it does, why lines can spring a leak, and how to care for your lines to prevent leaks from occurring.

How Does Your Gas Line Work?

Gas LineA natural gas line is connected to your home with what is called a service line. Natural gas is pumped from the plant through pipes, and into the service line near your home. When it reaches your house, the pipes get smaller and less pressurized. Each service line has a gas meter attached to it so you can see how much gas you use and the company can charge you accordingly. The meter also has a pressure regulator on it so when the natural gas comes into your house through the service line there will be very low pressure.

Through the service line, the natural gas then flows into your home to power appliances such as your water heater, your stove, and your oven. Anything in your home that has a pilot light uses natural gas. You might even have a natural gas fireplace that aides you in starting a fire burning for the cold winter months. Nearly every home in city limits is hooked up to natural gas so it’s important to ensure that it works properly.

What Causes Gas Leaks?

Gas leaks can occur for several different reasons. Thankfully, most all gas leaks are fixable relatively fast.

  • Cracks in Pipe: Like all pipes, gas lines can spring leaks due to cracks from years of use and old age. If this occurs, the line will need to be replaced.
  • Damage: Gas lines can be damaged from natural events such as earthquakes or from being jostled, hit, or otherwise punctured by debris.
  • Age: The older the pipe, the more worn down that pipe will be. Over time they can warp, bend, or break. Check your pipes regularly for signs of aging.

If you catch the scent of garlic or sulfur, you could have a gas line leak. Natural gas has no scent so the gas company adds an odor to the natural gas you purchase to give it a distinctive smell. If you smell this at any time around your home, shut off all appliances, don’t use light switches or anything electric, and leave the house. Call a plumber right away!

Preventing Gas Leaks

Preventing Gas Leaks

When moving into a new home or a new-to-you home, have a plumber out to inspect the gas line before you start using the gas for your home. Start on the right foot by ensuring the lines are set up correctly. Next, check for signs of wear and tear on a regular basis. Check for signs of cracks, dents, bends, or other damage after earthquakes, severe storms, or other natural disasters. Finally, have a plumber inspect your piping yearly to ensure everything is working as it should.
