Air Conditioning History 101

As the weather starts to heat up, the air conditioner units get turned on. While they have become an important part of everyone’s daily lives, many aren’t aware of how air conditioner history was made and how impressive the man who invented them truly was. Let’s change that today! In this article, AC contractors share the history of the AC, a pivotal appliance that has not only impacted our comfort but also created an industry that will continue for generations to come!

The Inventor of the Air Conditioner

AC Inventor - Willis CarrierAir conditioner history was made in 1902 by a man named Willis Carrier.

Born in 1876 in Angola, New York, Carrier lived a fairly unassuming life. All that changed after graduating from Cornell University in 1901 with his mechanical engineering master’s degree. He went on to immediately get a job at a local heating company, the Buffalo Forge Company. It was there that he came up with the idea for a machine that could cool the home.

After making air conditioner history, Carrier worked for a few more years at Buffalo Forge Company before founding his own company in 1915. The Carrier Corporation is still in business, making air conditioning units and equipment today. Carrier was involved with the company until his death in 1950, at age 74.

35 years after his death, Carrier was awarded a place in the National Inventors Hall of Fame. He was also featured in Time Magazine as part of their 100 Most Influential People of the 20th Century. His place in air conditioner history has more than been assured.

What Was The Time Period Like When It Was Invented?

Ticking ClockTo understand how impressive the first entry into air conditioner history truly was, it’s important to understand exactly what the time period was like when it was invented.

The early 1900s was a time before the vast majority of the modern conveniences often taken for granted were available. There were no buildings featuring any sort of cooling system except for using fans to move the air across ice blocks to superficially cool them down. People in the early 1900s were used to being hot.

On the flip side, there was also plenty of innovation happening. The first movie theaters were opening across the country, and automobile use was becoming more and more prevalent. The country was on the verge of some major changes, and many of them started with the air conditioner history Carrier made in 1902.

How Air Conditioner History Continues Today

Modern Air Conditioner System

Although air conditioner history was made with that first very system in 1902, that’s not where it stopped. The system has continued to improve since then, turning into air conditioning as we know it today.

While the 1902 system may seem basic now, it was incredibly advanced for its time. It controlled both the temperature and the humidity of the home by passing air through a filter, which was unheard of prior to that. As the air moved through the system, it was passed over coils that held a coolant product, which cooled the air and created “coolth,” or a cool fog.

20+ years later, in 1933, the company Carrier founded went on to develop an even higher-tech air conditioning unit that included mechanical controls, an evaporator coil, and a belt installed on the condensing unit. Modern AC units still use this same technology today, and air conditioner history continues to develop, all thanks to Carrier.
