The Process of Repiping a Home

Home repair is not the most fun activity to partake in. It can be scary, dirty, and stressful, but it is necessary in order to keep the home running in the safest and most efficient manner. For example, one small water leak in the pipes may not seem like a big deal or that it’s critical to fix.

But if it’s not handled properly, and the plumbing system is not maintained, another leak can spring. And then another. Pretty soon, the house is in desperate need of repiping, which can be a lengthy and expensive process. In this article, homeowners can learn more about repiping and when it’s needed. They can also learn maintenance tips to prevent the need for repiping services.

What Are Home Repiping Services?

Repiping the home is the process of replacing all of the pipes in the home with new ones. When there is severe damage or a series of pipes that are old or leaking, repiping is often the best solution to prevent further damage.

So how does it work? To be respectful of the homeowner’s belongings, plumbers should cover the carpet, furniture, or other items in the home to protect them from dust and debris. Then they’ll begin to make cuts in the drywall to locate the pipes, take them out, and replace them with new piping.

After the replacement, they’ll patch up the drywall and retexture it. The goal of the plumber is always to minimize the damage to other areas of the home, which is why they take those precautions to cover the homeowner’s belongings and patch things up to look like nothing ever happened.

Why Is Repiping Needed?

There are many reasons that lead homeowners to need repiping services.

  • repiping serviceSimply put, the pipes are old. Pipes have an average lifetime of around 50 years, but they will corrode and wear down over time. Unfortunately, the pipes are typically installed at the same time, so they’ll likely need to be replaced at the same time.
  • If leaks are springing left and right in the pipes, it’s time to have them replaced. Keep in mind, the pipes in the house are typically all made of the same material. If one starts to leak, the others are likely to be next.
  • If the quality of the water has gone downhill, the house could benefit from replacing the pipes. For instance, if there is consistently low water pressure, discolored water, temperature fluctuations, or strange odors coming from the water, these are all signs that pipes will need to be replaced.

Can Repiping Be Prevented?

Insurance doesn’t typically cover repiping services, so it can be quite expensive to do. Additionally, it is a time-consuming process. Depending on the size of the home and how many pipes it has, this process can take anywhere from two days to an entire week to complete the job. Therefore homeowners want to avoid repiping if they can.

Engaging in regular maintenance inspections can help catch corrosion or leaks early on that could prevent the need for repiping. However, there are some cases (such as pipe aging) that can’t be prevented. When the time comes for repiping the house, it’s important that homeowners understand this need before further damage occurs.
