The Struggles of Home That Need a Repipe

As building construction techniques and materials improve with time and technology, you may find yourself having to make upgrades to systems within your home that are outdated or have outlived their service life. The median age of homes in the US is 37 years old, while over half of the homes in the US were built before 1990. Building codes have come a long way in those 30 years, not mention the improvements that have been made in the last 50 years.

Chances are good that at some point, the outdated systems in your home will need to be replaced due to old age. Your plumbing is no different. Repiping services offered by plumbers are dedicated to doing just that. In this article, you will learn more about repiping and why you may need it.

What Is a Home Repipe?

As your home ages, you will start experiencing problems with your existing plumbing because of old metal pipes. The pipes can exist in your freshwater lines, made of galvanized steel, or your sewer lines, made of cast iron. Metal water and sewer lines are vulnerable to oxidation and corrosion from water and other chemicals that are put down drains.

Repiping is a process by which your plumber will replace all or large portions of your existing plumbing to newer, long-lasting materials. Copper, PVC, and PEX are the preferred materials for replacement. Each of these is expected to last longer with fewer problems when compared to the galvanized water line.

Why Do You Need Repiping?

If your home is more than 30 years old, then you’re probably getting close to needing a repiping. The expected life of a galvanized water pipe is about 40 years under the right conditions. The first step you need to take is to verify what material your existing lines are made of.

There are also some signs that indicate your pipes are starting to become compromised. The signs include:

  • repiping serviceRust-Colored Water
  • Foul-Smelling Water
  • Low Water Pressure
  • Mineral Build-Up on Fixtures
  • Leaks
  • Numerous Repairs
  • Clogs in Drain and Sewer Lines

All of these signs indicate that the inside of your water pipes are compromised. Apart from the “ick factor” of having discolored and stinky water, you will start to become aware of the need for repairs as pipes leak or burst and cause water damage to your home. Early awareness is the key to preventing further damage.

Steps to Take for Repipe Prevention

Nothing can stop pipes from oxidation but there are a couple of good practices you can use to take care of your plumbing. First, install a water softener. Water softeners help reduce mineral-building scale that contribute to corrosion in your pipes.

Secondly, avoid harsh drain cleaners. If you have metal sewer lines, drain cleaners can immediately damage them and require replacement. If you are having frequent clogs it is best to call a plumber for help before you damage your pipes further.

Finally, have your pressure regulator checked. The pressure regulator ensures that you don’t have a spike of pressure in your home. When they go bad, high-pressure water is allowed to stress your pipes. Maintaining the correct pressure prevents stress on your pipes.
