The Spread of Viruses in Water

Like many homeowners, you likely don’t give your water quality a second thought. While most water treatment plants in the United States are thought to employ treatment tactics that kill viruses, there are still chances that bacteria and other pollutants can make their way into your water as it flows into your home.

Contaminated water can cause the spread of diseases very quickly through a community. Especially if the community has issues with their water already. Luckily, there are water filtration systems to help protect you from potentially contaminated water.

The SARS Virus in Water

virusSevere acute respiratory syndrome, or SARS, came into the public view in 2003 during an outbreak that had the potential to become a pandemic. SARS most commonly causes fever, body aches, cough, and fatigue.

SARS has been found to be spread through water droplets and contaminated water supply. Additionally, waste was another major reason the virus spread so quickly.

Water in your plumbing is one of the most affected areas by this as sewage can sometimes contaminate clean water and even animal droppings can pose a risk. While this virus seems to have been contained, it’s still a good idea to take precautions in regard to drinking water.

Hepatitis E. in Water

Hepatitis E. is another virus that can be transmitted through infected water. In most cases, the water has been contaminated by the feces of an infected person. While this isn’t as common in the US, it is an issue in developing countries and for those who travel a lot.

In developed countries, the Hepatitis E. virus can be caused by the consumption of undercooked deer or pork. Hepatitis E. is a liver disease for which there is no cure. Proper treatment can lessen the severity of the disease, and should only be conducted by health care providers.

Using Water Filtration to Protect Your Home

filter virusLike most homeowners, you probably rely on the city plant to keep your water clean. However, a lot can happen between the plant and your main water line. The best way to combat water-borne diseases and bacteria in your water is with a whole-home water filtration system.

Systems like water softeners, UV filters, and ion exchange systems, can all be installed directly on the water main. As water enters your home, it filters through the system, removing tons of impurities like bacteria, minerals, and in some cases viruses as well.

If a whole-home filtration system isn’t the right option for you, even opting for a point of use filter can help. These small filters generally attach to specific fixtures like your kitchen faucet or your showerhead and protect you from poor water quality. And if all else fails, you can always opt for the most basic type of filtration around - boiling water.

Boiling your water is a good way to kill bacteria. Simply bringing your drinking water to a boil for 1 minute can help purify your water. Boil for 3 minutes if you live over 6500 feet above sea level. Note that boiling your water does not remove other impurities like heavy metals. Using a filter and boiling your water can remove most impurities and bacteria.
